Robin Hood uses Citadel’s trading platform to clear 65% of its trades.
Citadel sold 140% of Gamestop to drive down the price. That’s illegal. They don’t actually own the shares, so they sold something they don’t actual possess.
Gamestop fans decided to buy up the stock.
Now the prices is well above $100 a share. If Citadel doesn’t have the shares to deliver on 2/1, they will have to buy it at market price in order to actually sell it.
The problem is you can’t own 140% of anything.
Citidel should have interesting questions to answer. Chances are they won’t have to.
