Knoppix tips?

Posted on 01/10/2021 9:25:44 AM PST by djf

Ok, I'm getting fed up with the internet and Windows. Windows not-so-much, but under WinXP, the versions of Firefox and Chrome I can run are pretty ancient and I either get hit by tons of ads or it gives me a time error and won't even let me in. So I have an older CD which is Knoppix 5.1 and I am trying to configure it to talk to my modem. If you have had experience with this and have hints/tips, please let me know! TIA!

Yes, they make all their newer Mint distros in a 32 bit version too. I installed the 18.3 on an old emachine and in a 2002 HP laptop and they ran just fine, made them brand new up to date computers that are just fine for websurfing. :)

You might have to get a USB modem that is designed to be detected by linux.

Were there still Dial-Ups in 2005?

There are still dialups in 2021, evidently.

I thought about a clean install of Mint 20.1. I read of some have a bad experience with Mint 20 when it came out.

I will stick with Mint 18.3, since I am retired and only really need the basics.

Updates and upgrades seem to create as many problem as they resolve.

At the rate Big Tech is trying to shut down conservative speech, we may have to resort to the ole BBSs.

They were fun in the late 80s and early 90s.

If you like KDE, MX offers you a choice of KDE, Xfce4, and Fluxbox desktops.

I do prefer Mint. It is absolutely wonderful. As I said, I consider it the ultimate Windows replacement and better than Windows in many ways. But my two old computers run much better with MX then they do with 32-bit Mint. I saw it and ran benchmarks to verify it. MX has the same hardware support as Mint but it uses less memory, leaving more to run other things like browsers and applications. And, as nice as the Mint Cinnamon desktop is, the MX Xfce4 desktop is not very far behind.

I have a laptop and a desktop running Mint. I also have a laptop and a desktop running MX. I have tried both distros on all four machines. On the newer machines Mint is the better distro. But on the older, 32-bit machines with only 2Gb RAM there is no question that MX performs better.

We just can’t ignore the fact that Mint has said they will not be going forward with 32-bits. The most recent version was released just over a year ago. Mint pledges support for that version for two more years. But then it will go the way of Windows XP, a decent OS that can’t run browsers because Microsoft stopped updating it with the security features contemporary browsers require.

“.. bring back the BBSs!”

What do you thing FR is? It’s nothing more than a BBS with a snazzy face to it.

If they cut off the net (including the underweb), we may have to go HAM/shortwave.

I am hoping it doesn’t go that far, but things are looking bleak.

I do miss the internet (pre WWW). At least, back then, few people knew how to use the net.

"resort to the ole BBSs"

I have no problem with that... it kept the net clean back then, if people didn't know how to use it, they didn't ;^)
But, we would have to be able to communicate with other FReepers and patriots.

I respect your desire to get Knoppix going.
:-)

I suggest a more apropriate venue for your quest would be “irc” on freenode in the #knoppix channel.

Lets blunder on anyways...
What kind of modem?
Why do you need Knoppix running to download and burn ISO images?

I’m willing to burn CDs for ya but I’m not mobile. As a last resort send me self addressed postage paid CD mailer and I’ll burn em for ya. I have plenty of blank CDs that I’ll never use so we can also claim made with 100% recycled post consumer save the planet BS! lol
Your local library might be a faster solution for this approach.

No, I don’t have a new Knoppix downloaded.
I DO HAVE the latest version of Ubuntu installed - it hosed my system so I can’t boot WinXP anymore so I lost all my stuff,,, and I’m not happy about that... well the “stuff” is still there, I just can’t get XP to boot so I an thinking about FIXMBR but then will I lose Ubuntu? Ubuntu is not very good with multi OS loaders, etc.

BTW, It is an Xfinity wireless modem but I am ethernet attached, I’m talking to you right now under Ubuntu but I’m not thrilled with it,... I think I would like something more RH like or Knoppix like.

If your modem is Xfinity I’ll assume it’s cable.
If it’s cable there is not normally any need to configure anything “modem” related. Just tell Knoppix to use ethernet port and get IP address from router/modem.

Why don’t you solve your original Knoppix ISO image problem while you have Ubuntu working??? I don’t understand your initial requirement to have old Knoppix working to get new Knoppix CD for new install.

For example;
go to the following page
https://knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
Select a mirror and download the CD image.
Burn it to a CD. Boot on the CD and install 8.6.1 Knoppix and declare success? That is your stated goal.

BTW, I’m NOT a Knoppix user, Slackware is my distro since 1995.

I think Ubuntu uses ‘grub’ for booting. DuckDuckGo “grub dual boot winxp”. Exidently “super grub” is how many folks get winxp workin again...

At some point everyone has to upgrade their hardware to run current software.

Yes, if all your hardware works fine with that you can keep it forever if you like. I tested the new 20.x versions and had issues. So I am going to stick with the stable 18.3. Here is the cool deal with linux, you can always just update only the kernel it’s self and maybe the apps if you want to, and keep the distro you like.

But the only time you might need to update the kernel is if you load it on a newer machine that needs the newer kernel for the CPU support etc. But if everything works just leave it alone, no need to update anything with the OS, just apps maybe if and when they improve apps. :)

First thing to do when a person gets Linux is remove that update, update, update, frame of mind. No need at all...

That is MS brainwashing because of their bad product we had to deal with for so many years. :)

I had one last thought about this thread. I agree with Pollard that 2GB max is a very limited line.

But if you wanted to force the issue it wouldn’t probably be too hard. The LXDE desktop uses next to nothing in terms of system memory and resources and XFCE is equally pretty light weight. That would leave a lot of memory left for one of the lesser-used browsers.
