According to ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’ we had functioning bases on the moon 20 years ago and were up to sending a mission to Jupiter. It all seemed possible and even likely back in 1968. What happened?

"This could pose serious consequences to life on Earth." Nice little throwaway line at the end of the piece with no further comment whatsoever. By the way, that Abell 2261 is something like 3 billion light years away, so I suspect those "consequences" aren't exactly imminent.
