A 24-year-old Russian woman was electrocuted when her charging iPhone fell into the water as she was taking a bath, according to a report.

Olesya Semenova’s lifeless body was found by her roommate in their apartment in Arkhangelsk, East2West News reported.

“I screamed, shook her, but she was pale, did not breathe and showed no signs of life,” Daria told the emergency operator. “I was really scared. When I touched her, I got an electric shock.” She added that she found Semenova’s iPhone 8 in the water — still charging.

I've never seen Mythbusters, but a friend said they did some kind of experiment, and such things wouldn't electrocute someone. Of course, this was supposedly plugged in. Why didn't it electrocute the woman who reached in to get it?

Electrocuted by LOW Voltage?? that charger put out 12 volts, something is missing from the story

“Why didn’t it electrocute the woman who reached in to get it?”

Because the circuit was blown.

Unlikely that a 5VDC charging current is going to electrocute someone. Something else occurred here.

They don’t mention that there was an extension cord involved. Always is.

The only likely way that could happen is if the transformer (the white charging block) was plugged into an extension cord, and the end of the extension cord also fell into the water.

But my phone takes forever to charge anyway.

My guess is she had an extension cord near the tub (not a good idea) into which she plugged the charger. So she accidentally pulled the extension cord - and 110VAC - into the water.

No GFCI outlets in Russia I guess.

Exactly. Even overseas with voltage differences, the current would be insufficient to electrocute anyone.

Apparently no GCFI on the outlet, either.

If she died in the USA this would somehow be related to COVID to increase the fatality rate!

No GFI there, eh?

A direct short like that would blow most ANY breaker/fuse.

This isn’t how she ACTUALLY died.

Could it be trouble with the outlet?
