It's just a very large scale sting operation to weed out the bad actors. The Supreme Court could have ruled in their favor, but the R's on the Court are in on the plan. The longer they stretch it out, the more corrupt officials they can take out. It really is that simple.

When I moved to very rural area I had a great neighbor who took a shine to me and our closeness helped much with overcoming a very strong reticence to newcomers. Didn’t notice any intellectual fault with most here though. About the same amount as most places.
Though at first people were willing to appear stupid around the newcomer. Challengingly so at times.
