I went to both. I liked Herculaneum more because there seemed to be a lot less tourists. I really got to take it all in.
Herculaneum and Pompeii, bucket list items one and two. I had hoped to go there this past May but you see how that turned out! In Oxford, England last year they had a wonderful exhibit on food in Pompeii including some of the most famous artifacts relating to food, cooking and dining. That only whetted my appetite so to speak.
I thought for sure I would open this thread up and there would be a screenshot from Spartacus with Laurence Olivier and Tony Curtis.
We visited Pompeii in 1970 while serving in the US cold war.
Can’t be true. Slavery only affected Africans brought to the Americas
Thats impossible slavery didn’t exist until 1619!
A couple of Christian artifacts have been found there; so the new faith was established there by 79 AD...
Yep, I have visited a number of sites of pyroclastic flows. Fortunately long after they occurred. Recently, some lookie loos visited an active volcano in New Zealand during a cruise. A few of them actually survived. Spending your honeymoon in the burn ward is not a good way to go.
bkmk
More than likely a white, northern European slave.
A bit south of Salerno, Paestum is worth a visit--three ancient Greek Doric temples almost side by side, among the best-preserved ancient Greek temples.
They all fled downward to the sea when they should have headed for the hills where they just might have stood a chance.
That was spectacularly brutal.
Mother Nature is a force like no other.
Thanks for that. Puts 2020 in perspective.
I don’t see either victim “face down”. I do wish people could at least be accurate.
Toured there in ‘96. An older man lost his wife on the tour and we had to retrace our route to find her. She was still in the brothel staring at the “menu.”
Depends on how good of a head-start you’ve gotten.
I’ll bet I could give one a run for its money.
Nice picture, thanks for posting this. I’ve been offline since the big update around here, and am in the process of switching platforms, not that much fun.
