Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Pretty markings on this morning’s floof.

Good morning.

Happy Sunday before Thanksgiving.

Thank you. Six days to the Advent Kitteh!

Tom the Son is coming over this afternoon to discuss final meal plans for Thanksgiving. I should make sure his roommates all have plans; I think they have family in town.

I had an awful time trying to sleep last night, and I have no idea why, for sure, but I think the three-hour nap had something to do with it. It was 2100 before I slept, and then fitfully.

I suspect I will sleep better tonight, but no matter how I feel, I won’t be taking a nap.

Hmpf.

How is your supply of bookmarks? The library actually had some, so I got some for you. No telling how long it will be before I get them mailed, though...I’m not all that great on writing letters, lately.

Charlie called on Thursday to tell me that four (or was it five?) of the residents I knew had passed away in a three-week period. We had that happen there once before, with five people going in as many weeks. He was really upset by it.

Other than that, he sounded good. He said his rent checks had not been cashed since the lockdown in March. I don’t think it was that long, but they can’t even use the laundry room any more. Brand new, and untouched. He’s not a happy person.

Poor Charlie! I found a lot of bookmarks when I was cleaning up in the kitchen (in anticipation of the Advent Kitteh!) and I expect to find more when I clear the desk superstructure.

Just finished an email to my mother, and I’m about to start looking at your letter. Check your freepmail.

Charlie reminds me in some ways of “Gladys Kravitz” on “Bewitched.” He’s a very nervous person and gets upset by little things. But he’s got a good heart, and I guess that’s why the deaths are so hard on him. He makes friends very easily.

FReepmail checked and responded to.

The kitteh sez iz a Mundy and I don’ wanna go dere.

Good morning.

Back from the laundry, and all is put away. The wet stuff has to be hung to dry and the bed needs to be made, but so far, so good. Maybe I’ll have a “normal” Monday. Whatever that is. I hope.

Whatever it is, kitteh will scowl at you!

Jake went out and got his feet wet, then left muddy pawprints on the sheets. Great cat.

Jake was reminding you that it’s Monday.

Maybe, after such a good sleep (for a change) I’ll get something done today. I hope.

I checked the library website and the 8th season of “Death In Paradise” will be available for me on Dec. 12th. Not sure when “Father Brown,” season 8 will be in, but soon!

The sun is up here, but it’s cloudy. I think I’ll go to Walmart fairly promptly, while I have some gumption.

I need to go hang the sleep shirts and then I’ll see how I feel.

Kara put her grandmother’s fruitcake recipe on Facebook this morning, and as soon as I get the answers to two questions, I’ll make a list and buy some disposable small loaf pans. I’d like to make some fruitcake (no candied fruit) for my church friends as a thank you for being so kind to me since I’ve been here.

That is a very kind gesture. I need to think of something to give my choir members this year. I usually buy wreaths from the Scouts/Knights fundraiser, but we couldn’t do it this year.

Good morning, all. Wet and chilly here. I don’t see much chance of a snowy Thanksgiving. From what I understand, those are rare in these parts. No horse drawn sleighs to go to grandmother’s this year.

Happy Monday, ArGee. I have to buy very large amounts of bacon for all the recipes Tom the Son has planned.
