Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

What a funny little kitty face! Looks like a furry Yoda!

Good morning.

I’m still trying to get my Bitmoji to work, but it’s a slow process. It seems I inadvertently disabled one of the apps that made it work, so I’m trying to rectify it now. Slow going!!

I was up at midnight again, for some reason. Oh, yeah. I couldn’t shut my brain off. Unngh.

Good morning. I understand about the brain.

It’s raining here, but that doesn’t stop the cats from going out and in.

Cold here. It’s a wind chill of 28° again. At least there’s no rain. In a bit, I’ll go out and put up the flag. The porch light shines on it, so it’s good.

I’m just glad the heater works in the truck! It would be a long cold drive into St George, otherwise!

I need to drop off the DVDs at the library on the way out of town, and then stop there to pick up the ones that are waiting for me on the way home, then go across the street to the bank to get quarters for laundry.

It will be a long morning, but at least when I get home, I’ll have a date for eye surgery!

We need to put our flag back up. The boys took it down during a storm a week or so ago. The rain has mostly stopped here, but it’s stupidly hot.

Good luck on all your errands! I dropped an audiobook off at Union library yesterday, but I didn’t have time to look for more books to read.

I forgot we won’t get the Wall Street Journal because it’s a Federal holiday.

One of the old guys two apartments away has a flag on his lawn, 24/7. He has a spotlight on it and its very bright!

The flag is up, but even the few seconds it took to do that and say the pledge, I got very cold!

I like to think they’re practicing for the unemployment lines.

Or practicing for union jobs.

Wednesday, it is.

I went for a walk in the drizzle and found some yard stuff I want. James and Vlad and I are going to get it in the truck.

It’s 30 degrees and though the wind isn’t blowing any more than it was a while ago, the flag is moving a lot. Brrr.

I took a nap for an hour and think I feel better but I woke up in a panic, thinking I had slept an hour longer than I planned to, but I had set the alarm and it still had over 15 minutes to go. Don’t know what the panic was, but I’m glad I didn’t have to rush out the door.

That happens to me sometimes, too. I usually set the stove time and tell various boys to come get me if it goes off.

That is not a good feeling. It makes my heart race and I get really disoriented, and that makes my panic even worse. I blame the latter on CFIDS. That may be out in Left Field, but the disease is insidious and I can’t discount anything.

I have to try to figure out if an action or reaction is “normal” or if its something that is new but could be triggered by CFIDS or if it is attributable to CFIDS and nothing else.

So now that I’ve done a complete babble, it’s time for me to drive off into the rush-hour traffic.

Later.

From my experience in rush hour traffic, a lot of the people seem to be babbling.

That’s at any time of day. Terrifying!

Finished a church meeting on Zoom. Now I’m going to sort some laundry and then find lunch. Jake is here, which leads me to believe that DP is doing something with meat in the kitchen.

Even though you said it and I read it, and I put my flag out, it didn’t dawn on me until I got inside the city limits: Federal Holiday! So the rush-hour traffic was non-existent, the streets in Washington City and St George were lined with flags (beautiful sight!) and I made it in with 10 minutes to spare.

I drove home with my eyes still dilated but the good news is, I have a morning appointment next Thursday — 0800 — to have the right eye lased. *happy dance*

The library was closed as was the bank, but tomorrow is another day, and all is well in Boring, Utah.

If I could just see the laptop screen!

Happy Dance! I’m sure it will clear up pretty soon. I just took Pat to work, and now it’s back to cooking.
