A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

All I have to do is ask Tom!
The young folks are stirring. They’ll be a lot slower by Friday.
LOL! Yes, the fatigue of exercise will win out every time!
I just got the clothes folded and put away, so I’m good for my grock run.
There are some small things I think I’ll do today are tedious but need to be done, anyway. I have to decide on two or three outfits for church and the rest will be packed. The same with the jewelry. I plan to put it all in snack bags so the jewelry case is empty. That way, the peeps doing the moving only have to worry about breaking the mirror.
Then the drawers will need to be put into Space Bags and then into a box and the clothes in the closet will be put into bags on hangers, and boxed up. I don’t want to be stuck like I was last time! Two weeks to finish and too much stuff for the truck!
Sharon is worried that I won’t have enough room on the truck so she keeps asking me, “You taking all this? What about the bookcases?” Almost every time she comes over. LOL!
I’m sure more will fit on the truck than you expect. Space is like that.
We’re off in 10 minutes, have to set up the archery range before the various youth are distributed where they belong.
Have a good day!
This time, I suspect I’ll have room left over! There are several large items that are not going with me this time - freezer, table, microwave cart, bedroom set.
And I’ve donated an awful lot as well, so I’m not worried about things “fitting.”
Good morning. Happy Tuesday!
I keep thinking we need an unofficial un-Friday silliness thread but then I read the news and it’s all the silliness I can take.
I bet Monty Python would have never taken off if they’d had to compete with today’s U.S. politics.
Yay, I survived another trip to Walmart, and it’s true they’ve changed the hours to being open at 0600 from now on. That makes things a little easier for me, but not as easy as if they went back to 24/7. </whine
I agree with you about Monty Python! The news is all laughable. Or would be, if it weren’t so devastating to America.
Bloom County has a fun comic strip: New Strip 6.14.21
It’s worth checking out!
I didn’t know he was back.
And my phone’s display is dead. Well, not really dead, just pixellated so nothing can be read on it. I can receive calls, but that’s it. I’ll be off to Best Buy in a bit.
Ah, a re-run. I remember it when it was new, but not so well that it wasn’t worth a re-read.
I didn’t know he was gone anywhere!
Anyway, since the strip had Hobbes in it, it was worth reading!
Did you have to buy a new phone? Or just tweak the old one?
Survived day two! I don’t know what I’m doing tomorrow except that it isn’t archery.
I bought a new one. The old one isn’t worth much right now. I’ll take it by Best Buy to be recycled once it won’t start up any more.
“Their cover of the song originally recorded by Big Joe Turner”
Holy crap! I have never seen a post with this many replies and all I want to do is comment on this early reply. Big Joe Turner’s version of “Shake, Rattle and Roll” is far superior. His voice is so distinctive. I never knew who he was until I got Sirus radio on my car and started listening to 50’s music because I had become bored with music I grew up with. Only sad thing is that talents like Big Joe, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry are gone.
I kept dreaming about a murder plot that had Tom Selleck (as Magnum, P.I.), a woman named Alma who has Spanish Christian music videos on YouTube, a plot regarding real estate and the short-term rental market, and Shannon, who was being very friendly, so I think she was behind it all.
Awww...Looks like my Hobbes when she was a baby!
Good morning.
How are your feet this morning?
The photos from yesterday were fun!
Sorry, willk, but you have inadvertently fallen into the Undead Thread. It gave it’s all for us, so it’s time for us to hijack another thread and move on. I’ll add your name to the ping list, if you want.
Sometimes, we get some good threads, but mostly groaners. Still, you’re welcome to join us if you wish. Our numbers have dwindled of late but it’s quality that counts, right?
‘Face
;o]
My feet want me to spend the day lying on the sofa with a needy cat, but too bad for them. I don’t know what I’m doing today. It might be a lot of walking, or it might not.
Will camp be every day this week? Half a day on Friday? Is it hot at camp?
Our heat wave is continuing, and I don’t want to see my electric bill when it shows up in two weeks. Unngh.
Every day this week, 8 to 4:30 (for staff). I have choir practice Friday evening and need to get home and functional, but I might leave the teenbros to help with cleaning and tear-down. Pat is off work on Friday and could be assigned to help and then bring them home with his Famous Driving Skills.
