Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

Posted on 10/20/2020 9:33:20 PM PDT by BenLurkin

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

W00t!

LOL!

Good ON ya!

I was listening to an uplifting (read: spiritual) talk, as I do for 30 - 70 minutes every morning, so snagging a W00t is easy if one is close and I’m not! ;o]

THAT is such an appropriate photo for the caption!

Some are clever, some are cute and some are just inspired!

Thanks!

Now I’m going to go make my bed.

T-c just sent a text saying she was fine and may have interwebs later.

Thanks for the update.

I am reminded of the late Joan Rivers explaining why she hates housework.

“You make the bed, you do the dishes, and six months later you just have to do it again!”

She was sometimes funny because her humor was honest. Other times, she was silly. But I liked her!

The bed is made and the dishes are done and as soon as I pack up a few things in here, I’ll work on the kitchen.

Was puppy expecting her Cone of Shame last night?

She seems to have adapted to a “no cone” life again very quickly.

Now we need to remind her there are rules that apply to post-surgery puppies. I guess a spay doesn’t calm them as much as we had hoped.

Well, she’s still a puppy, even though she’s gone through her first heat. Her body is still full of hormones and it will take a few weeks/months for them to dissipate.

More boxes packed! :o])

As usual, it rained on my Birthday. Still, I grilled steaks and had some wine.

Thanks Monkey Face!

Good morning, ArGee!

Thanks for the kitteh!

We won’t have one tomorrow... :o[

It’s going to be in the 90’s again today, but too late for me to enjoy it. Although I’m changing my schedule so I get up later so I can fit in with my FS’s schedule when I get there! It’s tough!

It’s a good thing I’m taking a day of rest because I worked hard yesterday! If this keeps up, I’ll be done packing in two weeks, based on 2-3 days a week of actual packing.

I’m not on Socialist-book any more... No plans on going back any time soon either...

Thank you for the thought though. :-)

Thank you... Hitting 50 was hard... The further away from that I get... The more ok I am with it... :-)

This was my second attempt at increasing that distance. I have 7 more tries before 60 starts it all over again.

Yeah, I figured. I should have remembered and gone to MeWe. My bad. Two things happen when you get older.

1. You start to forget things and I don’t remember where I was going with this... ;o]
