A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

We will have showers before we leave. I’m going to Walmart after breakfast: we need more ice.
I’m done!
I’m a little breathless this morning, but it started yesterday, so that’s no surprise. It may or may not end any time soon, but I won’t worry about it. Just rest when I can.
When you go to Walmart will you pick up a half-dozen eggs for me, please? Thanks! I use them in my Just Crack An Egg breakfast dishes.
I put on a smaller size top this morning! When I packed up the things under the bed and put them into Space Bags, there were a couple of things in larger sizes that I was able to get rid of there are lots of things to celebrate. :o]
I need to take the trash out this morning, too. Maybe I can see the moon again. It was hiding behind the clouds on Monday.
Good morning. Happy humph day!
Puppy was very glad to not have the cone on her last night.
Enjoy your trip. Keep away from the vermicious knids.
It was probably a happy night for everyone, with the humans not having to put the cone on puppy. ;o]
Glücklich Mittwoch!
Congrats to the puppy!
Loading up is in progress, large square things on the bottom. Frank just discovered that he hadn’t put his socks and underwear in his bag. “How has he survived this long!?!” as we used to say about Bill.
Loading nearly complete. Thank you, me, for your extraordinary efficiency and forward-thinking!
Well, Frank will survive and learn along the way. It’s called, “On the Job Training,” or OJT. Some folks only learn that way. But it’s OK, as long as they learn. ;o]
Frank may do without clean socks and underwear when he’s not around me!
Exactly! Some learn the hard way, but they learn!
I just cleaned out the freezer. (So much for resting today.)
In a few hours I’ll go to the library and also get some gas in the vehicle.
Same to you, I think. Happy Wednesday.
It just feels like a Mittwoch to me, being in the middle of the week, and all... ;o]
It’s a quiet week, here, but I’m worn out so I’m going to go nap.
Later!
When I’m quiet here it’s because work is anything but.
bkmk
Yes, I believe that’s one thing I’ve been able to work out, but it’s taken me a long time to do so. I miss your wit, anyway! Work, weekends...witless... Oops. Did that sound as bad as I think it did? I just meant that when you’re gone, we’re lacking a wit!
(Should I put myself in Time Out, again?)
I still recall meeting one of the actresses in my grandfather’s old vaudville show. She said, “I hear you’re a real wit. I guess they were half right.”
Just so Face won’t be tempted.
