A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

That sounds like possible good news for your fellow New York denizens. If you say it’s a good thing, then its got to be a good thing.
I’m not good at sitting and doing nothing. I made a couple of calls and they produced good results. I have more to make but not today, I think. I’m very tired.
Jasper woke me up at midnight, which may be why the migraine is so ugly. But I tried to ignore it and gathered up a few small breakables and got them sorted, so at least I know what size box I need to pack them in. Now I need to find a larger box for the larger breakables. Baby steps...
Sitting and doing nothing? That’s what yew-tewb is for.
I was out doing stuff about soil. In about an hour, I have to get in the car with Patrick and go back for James and Vlad. I assume we’ll live.
Awww....lookit the sweet li’l floof!
Good morning.
I just filled the file box got this week with stuff from the cubby boxes under the desk, but I need another one for the file cabinet, and one for more genealogy.
Do you have Fun Things Planned for today?
The right side of the back of my neck feels stiff, so maybe that’s an indication that this migraine, for this time, is over. Or not.
I think I’ve been alone too long.
You have a lot of files!
We have choir at 9:00. Then we’re going over to Lisa’s - that’s a friend from Cub Scouts and Envirothon. Some frontier-life reenactors asked if they could set up in her yard, which is like ten acres, today, because all the parks and historic sites have been deterring visitors for months. Lisa said they could and invited friends over to hang out and see frontier life.
I got a frog card from you yesterday, and I put a bat card (I think) in the mail.
The paper chase never ends. But things will be easy to find in the event of my untimely demise. I’m the Keeper of the Family Genealogy and Other Related Files, and if the files are all in one place, then they can be sorted and shared much easier. At least this way, one will know where to look because the file boxes are labeled. ;o]
I gathered up the little breakables yesterday and depending on how I feel today, I’ll actually pack them. Since the bathroom was cleaned on a whim yesterday, I don’t have to worry about trying to fit that job in. Especially since I didn’t get much sleep last night. Unngh.
Anyway, my Saturday will be busy, interspersed with lazy.
Favorite Daughter and SO were tested yesterday and should have the results today or tomorrow. I’m thinking today if the tests are positive. She said she was feeling worse last night, so this is not good. All I can do is pray and wait.
I hope they get their results promptly. Drama Queen waited nine days to be told she didn’t have it, back in May.
I have a bat sticker left but keep forgetting to put it on the envelope. Maybe because I have no bat cards to send!
Of, yes! I almost stepped on a bunch of mushrooms the other day! I don’t know if they’re still there, but I’ll go out as soon as it’s light and if they are, I’ll take a photo. What a shock to see them!
The Dismally Inept Lawn Service decapitated a sprinkler head on Thursday, again. He’s down to one man, now, but the work is still being done in the same amount of time. There’s one to make you think. :o])
Maybe you’ll have a better lawn service in your next place.
If we had sprinklers, Epic Fail would wreck them.
They live in CO, a decidedly left-leaning state, so numbers count. They have jobs in the medical field, so they need to know. I hope the results are negative, since they can’t go back to work until they are given the OK.
Well the plans for the found lamp just went out the window. As I began taking it apart, I learned that the wiring is soldered into the socket, and that means I either have to junk it or think about a Plan B.
I may be able to cut the wire below the socket, split it and rebuild from there. I’ll dig out my how-to book...I really don’t want to toss that lamp! It’s too pretty!
The sprinkler head is the one that was broken just before the sod went down, but I need to tell Chuck.
It’s two apartments away and I heard it when I went to get the mail a while ago.
Just got a text from FD. She says she is worse, but he is a little better. I just told her to try and have some store deliver some Gatorade to replace the electrolytes. Her heart could start doing some really wonky things under this stress.
I think I’d give up on the lamp. I thought you were trying to have fewer things before you moved?
Mix the Gatorade half-and-half with 7-up.
This lamp is to replace the one I have that cost a whopping $8 at Walmart several years ago. I never liked it, but I needed a floor lamp and it was within my budget.
This one is heavy and doesn’t list. I need lamps because most places have no overhead lighting except in the kitchens. I need light. :o]
I hadn’t heard of that Gatorade mixture, but if it works I’ll tell her it’s worth it!
I can’t drink the stuff, myself as it causes my feet and hands to swell beyond belief.
