Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Good morning. Happy Monday.

The dog got through her procedure OK. Mrs. ArGee had to wait a while to pick her up as the vet had to do an emergency C-section to deliver 14 puppies. Puppy was a bit wonky Friday but seems to be feeling like herself now. Unfortunately she will probably drive us crazy trying to keep her calm until the stitches come out.

Still, she’ll never have an emergency C-section, so it’s worth it.

Happy Monday, and congratulations on a successful surgery for the dog.

It’s chilly here this morning, but by the time we’ve gone to the library, it will be warm enough to spread mulch again.

Good news about puppy-dog. She probably won’t be too active until later this week, as the surgery site is going to be painful, yet. When do you take her in for the stitches removal?

There is something to be said for not having to pay for an emergency C-section! Fourteen puppies! Wow!

I was thinking seriesly about trying to pack something this morning, but if I do, it will only be one or two boxes. Wash day is hard enough. Easier if I don’t do anything else, but still.

So I’ll wait a while and see how my back feels. It got cold and that always spells trouble for any plans I might have or want to make.

Go figure. Saturday’s card is missing but there’s another card in the mail.

I left a note for Adam about Saturday’s card when I was at the laundry room this morning. I hope it helps.

I also contacted stamps.com about the postage due that seems to be the norm for FS’s address in AR.

Meanwhile, I’m fighting to stay awake.

They had better find the birthday card. It had the correct address and postage and everything!

She is feeling active now. We’re trying to keep her calm.

The stitches come out a week from tomorrow. We will need a lot of help making it that far.

I had an interesting morning. My F-I-L’s accountant died last year and he had been doing Dad’s taxes for years. Dad decided to try someone who had sent him an ad in the mail. Saturday he called them to see what the status was and they gave him an appointment for 11:00 today. He asked me if I would go because he was so used to the other guy handling everything.

It all turned out well, but it took 3 hours out of my day (well, that and lunch did).

Well, egg on my face. Maybe big dogs are a lot different psychologically than smaller ones.

It’s nice to know your F-i-L trusts you enough to let you help on the financial stuff.

In other news, neighbor Lona with her nasty little four-legged shark isn’t making herself popular. After the run-in last week, one would think...but the UPS man came to deliver the iHerb box and he’s almost at my door when Chloe came after him from the other side of Lona’s car, which she was trying to back into her parking spot.

Again, with the pitiful whine, “Chloe, no. Chloe, stop, Chloe. No no.” I just knew I was going to have to call 911 and UPS would never deliver another thing to my door.

Jack the Dragon helped with yard work for a while. He ate some parsley leaves and fell over in the sunshine.

Is Jack your only dragon, now? Parsley must be dragon catnip.

Today’s kitteh is checkin’ to see who’s up.

Good morning.

I’ve been up, but I got side-tracked somehow, because I slept in almost an hour. I think this schedule change is harder on me than I thought it would be, but I am determined!

So the laundry is out of the bathroom, my face is combed and my hair put on, and I think I’m ready for Walmart. When I get back, I’ll need to sort pills. Crikey. I’m already worn out. My bad. Not a complaint — a statement of fact.

Just think: When I get moved, there will only be an hour’s difference in our times instead of the two it is now! Bonus!

Good luck on the Walmart trip. I thought about sleeping in, but DP’s alarm goes off at 5:30, so there was no point. I got up at 5:15, reminding myself that the coffee was ready and Jake would want to come in.

Jack is the only dragon, and we have Alice the gecko, World’s Most Boring Pet This Side of a Rock.

Jack likes to eat parsley, clover, and salvia leaves when he’s outside. He doesn’t care for arugula, though.

Good morning. Happy Tuesday.

The dog moved away from us when we went to put her to bed last night. She really doesn’t like sleeping in that collar. Of course, we are doing what we can to keep her out of it during the day, which just makes it worse when we have to put it on her at night.

7 more nights.

I woke up around 0120 and shut the alarm off. It was nearly 0400 when I woke up.

I figured the truck uses a gallon of gas per mile, with that burned valve, so I’ll have to borrow someone’s vehicle to go pick up my FS from St George when he comes to help me load up and drive on outta here.

When Grandson #4, Sam, started college, he sold/gave away his dragon. He obviously wasn’t thinking ahead when he got it because he knew he was soon to graduate high school.

There is so much to do today... and not much of it planned ahead of time.
