Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I decided I’d have to feel better to get my hair cut, so now, I’m waiting for the Bug Guy. In the Not Rain.

We had “not rain” yesterday and have it again today. But yesterday the complex put down bug poison, which we are concerned triggers seizures.

Nothing last night so that’s great. We hope to get her through Friday so she can go to her spay appointment without being concerned about complications.

I decided to sweep the floors before the Bug Guy comes and I had stepped out the back door to shake the dust mop off (the birds like to gather my hair for their nests!) and the neighbor with the nasty Chloe-dog was out in her yard. I didn’t realize she was there until she wished me a cheery good morning.

I turned to see who it was, as I’m shaking the mop, and from behind her comes this little brown blur at a dead run. I had turned my entire body when I turned to see who spoke, and shaking the mop seemed to be the incentive that nasty little dog needed.

I looked at the neighbor, still shaking the mop (for effect) and said, “You need to keep that dog on a leash when it’s outside, or keep it in the house. You know better!” Seems when I shook the mop in the dog’s direction, it scared her, the hackles went up and she high-tailed it for the back door.

If looks could kill, I’d be in the dying cockroach position. I will tell Chuck, and I think this is Lona’s last warning. She’s probably already called him and given him her own version of the story, but she just seems to think rules don’t apply to her. GAH!

As we have seen since late in 2018, rules apply to people who follow the rules, who are typically conservatives. Otherwise rules are suggestions only.

With this gal, I don’t even think rules are acknowledged. She’s never paid any attention to them since she moved in.

ORLY? Try parking in her spot. Just once. Even if she doesn’t have a car.

Then you’ll see if she knows the rules.

She has a parking spot and a car, but she tries to use the entire space, which is for her and her neighbor. Most of the time, he can’t get into his spot because of the way she parks her car. So you’re right about the Rools. There ain’t none according to her!

My vehicle is so small that it appears lost in the parking space assigned, but that’s probably because Rocky seldom uses her half of it.

They still didn’t have generic diet cola in cans. It’s a commie plot, I’m sure.

I wish you had “accidently” swung the mop like a baseball bat, ‘Face, and heard a good, solid *crack*.

It IS a commie plot about the diet cola. I can pick some up here and Darkfax it to you, if you want!

The nasty little dog wasn’t close enough, but if she had been, it would have been much more satisfactory to drop kick the snarly little beast. A good solid *thunk* would have been enormously pleasant to hear!

OKden.

The Admiral is getting all kinds of wonky, now, though the barometer is steady.

But myself is getting a little on the wonky side, so I’m heading down the hall. I may be back later.

Good luck, and if we don’t see you again until tomorrow, have a good night.

I’ve made a casserole.

Up because I don’t want to fall asleep, yet. This schedule change is weirding me out, but I don’t want to mess it up, so I’m trying very hard to adhere to it.

If you don’t hear anything by 1130 your time tomorrow (13th) could you please remind me I was going to call AR? I think I’ll be able to remember, but with me not feeling well, the brain is slightly scarmabled.

So this is me, off to bed, to read some more “Tent Life!”

At least you’re not in a burrow in Siberia!

I just put a note by my computer. Even if I don’t see it, some kid will say, “What does this mean, ‘Tell ‘Face to call AR?’ “

Such a brand new squee!

Good morning. I wonder if I’ll get used to this new schedule in time to move. *yawn*

I have to go to the library today. I wanted to go yesterday, but the Bug Guy didn’t come until almost 1100, and that was just too late for me to run the streets. I need to stop by Walgreen’s too, and jog them a bit. I need a prescription!

Good morning. Rescue kitten is 14 days old.

I need to go to the library, too, but it will probably be tomorrow.

I need an injection of energy, and that’s a fact.

Things may or may not be done today, except for the library, because I don’t want to pay a fine.

Now, though, I think I need to go make my bed so I can say I did SOMEthing today.
