A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Yes you do know who she is.
She’s the Girl from Ipanema.
LOL! No Way!
Way!
Gol-ly! *Gomer Pyle*
Heck of a name!
Choir practice completed, I’m wondering what I’ll do for my next thing. Lie down with Jake?
Lying down with Jake sounds great!
I just made a correction in one of my debit card addresses. They still had me listed as Henderson, but when I changed the address, there was no way I could delete the old address. I asked them politely if their IT person could go in and delete that address, because when I move, the card will still be valid, but the address will be different, and it will make three addresses for the same card. Unngh.
I got the bed made and had a thought while I was in there. Why don’t I take the jewelry sets (earrings, necklace, bracelet) and put them in snack bags for the move. That way, I won’t have to worry about a rat’s nest when I open the jewelry case when the thing is hung up in the other place. I hope I have wall space for it there, instead of having it hanging over the door. Jewelry case on one side, ironing board on the other. :o|
I just took my second dose of morphine, so I’ll be waiting to see if I have a sudden urge to pack, any time soon!
Brilliant idea about the jewelry. I do that with mine on the rare occasions I go on a trip where I’m going to make an effort with jewelry. More commonly, I just pick one set of neutral earrings and wear them all the time.
I’ve decided I’m going to turn on a podcast and sort Cub Scout Day Camp paperwork so I can send reminders to people whose forms aren’t complete, which I have to do individually, because someone’s feeling might be hurt if I sent a list to everyone.
The younger generation is so weird.
I usually just take one set of jewelry with me when I travel, to go with a nice outfit for church or dinner or whatever might come up needing me to look nice.
But I just can’t face a scarmabled mess in the jewelry case. It would take too long to sort it out. Who knows? Maybe this way I can identify the sets I don’t wear very often and bag them for donation.
Sounds like a plan.
It wouldn’t be much, but anything I don’t have to unpack is a bonus!
Finished going through the Day Camp paperwork and very gently nudging those who don’t have all their documents in ... speaking of “Why does everything have to be such a hassle?!”
At least I don’t have to nag about the money. The Pack Treasurer will do that, if necessary. I suppose I can send a list of the amounts to him, so he’ll know what to expect.
There used to be a comic strip called “Born Too Soon.” I find myself living in it quite frequently, these days.
And now, because I’ve worn myself out on the stupidity of other people, I need to go to bed.
I hope you have a good evening! Have a Pink Drink for me, please!
I hope you have a good night!
Climate change has made my wallet thin. Send money ASAP
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!
To all mothers and all those who have mothers, living or living on the Other Side, I hope your day is a good one. If your mother isn’t here, I hope you have fond memories of her! If she IS here, I hope you make fond memories with her!
‘Face
;o])
Good one!
What a gorgeously regal kitteh for this day!
Good morning!
I gave Sharon a doily for Christmas or her birthday or something, and in my living room, she didn’t seem all that impressed. Imagine my surprise when, every time she posts her little teddy bear collection, or the Nativity or flowers that Jerry has bought her, on FB they are always on that doily. I saw it again when I checked FB earlier and was even more touched that I was the last time I saw it. I don’t even know how to react.
FD either didn’t send a card, or didn’t send one soon enough, but she hasn’t mentioned it, so I’m thinking it’s the former. It’s OK. She’s new to this. She’ll get better.
About the only thing on the agenda this morning is church, and trying to keep the place cool until I get back from church. I don’t want to turn the A/C on. This place just gets so doggone stuffy, so the fans are working again. It seems last year, we had some time between the cold and the hot but this year it was winter one day and the next it was summer.
Your doilies are very nice.
We were just looking at our schedule. I’ll get Patrick to take his brothers to Mass at 11:00 and the rest of us will go at 1:00. There’s no youth group this evening.
