Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Yes, but the biggest factor I believe, was that she had Diphtheria as a teen and that left her with heart problems. She was also Rh Negative, and when she began having kids, there was no RhoGam available. It wasn’t invented until my younger sister was almost 10 years old, so there were seven of us, with and additional two that never made it to birth, that she brought into the world in spite of the problems.

So because illness and pregnancies, she napped, just so she could cope. Naps are probably what kept her from dying any sooner.

Life was harder back in the day! I’ve never had diphtheria, although it was a spelling bee word, and our family is all Positive.

I’m A+ and I’m thinking the three of us girls and our Real Brother are because our dad was.

I don’t know what the two Unreal Brothers and the Unreal Sister were, because all of them, as well as their dad are gone.

My mother almost died for want of a blood transfusion in the late 50s — AB- was very hard to find in Central Utah. But it wasn’t her turn to go. She lived another almost 30 years. :o]

Yeah.
Miss her humor.
Heck, miss having time to accomplish things.

What a precious floof!

Good morning.

The shower has been had, and I’m about ready to start my letter to Charlie. It seem strange to wear summer clothes. It seems there hasn’t really been summer since I moved here. My schedule probably has something to do with that.

I don’t know what the rest of the day will hold because I don’t yet know how I feel. Maybe I’ll have a better handle on it when I’ve finished writing that letter.

Were you able to order shoes for the James?

Good morning. No, I was not. They didn’t have delivery for them. We would have had to pick them up at a store in Charlotte. Super annoying!

We’ll try somewhere else with different brands. He could use a sturdier pair for camp!

Academy Sports has some shoes and boots at a decent price, although I don’t know if they’ll have James’s size. We can go up there later today.

I hate when Walmart wants me to go pick up something I’ve found online. If I wanted to go pick it up, I would have gone to all the Walmarts in the area until I found it. *sheesh*

Did you try Amazon?

Welp, Charlie’s letter is on the way, and I still have the Slows, I have no clue what the rest of the day will hold.

I used to donate blood every time I could, even though the beta thalassemia minor made it hard to pass the hemoglobin test. I got up to 3 gallons before I started failing so often it wasn’t worthwhile to go.

Anyway, I think I’m a-neg but I’m no longer sure.

I should probably look into donating plasma.

I was only able to donate a gallon before CFIDS set in, and since no one is sure how it’s transmitted, I thought it best to not donate. I wouldn’t even go near babies for a long time.

It’s a deeper question about donating plasma for me, because, again, who knows. I don’t want to pass this on, not even to my worst enemy.

It is Friday, isn’t it? Sunny, for sure.

I have a box of electronics ready to go to Cell Phones For Soldiers. I don’t know if I can afford to ship it, though — four tablets and two cell phones. Pretty hefty!

I donated blood often but then ran into anemia. I also donated platelets a couple of times.

Off on the quest for James’s’s shoes.

I had anemia a couple of times, and had to get transfusions. It had nothing to do with donating blood. It was bleeding ulcers. I hope I don’t ever have to go through that again!

We found the right shoes but not the Wide version, so we ordered them from home with free delivery. So there!

I check out some books about watercolor painting from the library. Maybe I will paint things. Maybe I’ll just read the books!

My dad always had to have the Wide version. My mother called it a “peasant’s foot.” Hmpf. She was talking to the offspring of said person with the peasant’s foot!

Watercolor painting books are always interesting to read. In fact, all instructional artwork books are interesting! I just can’t focus enough, these days — Adult ADHD and CFIDS don’t mix well.

I’d like to get back into artwork, but like everything else, I can’t decide the medium, though I do like charcoal sketching. Watercolor is good, but unlike my Real Brother, I was never very good at it.

My mother said, “The Allens will never fall off the earth, because we can hold on with our feet.” The wide feet come from her side, while a very large big toe is from my dad’s family. DP has bitty feet.
