Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I don’t know what I’m going to do today. I’ll try to pack up the stuff I sorted in the kitchen, but it’s not looking good. My eyelids are trying to slam shut. However, I have until about noonish before I have to give up on the “work” idea.

I’m beginning to hate small dogs. I’ve entertained the thoughts of getting a small dog when I move but it would have to be a breed that doesn’t bark.

What did I miss?

For some reason, I had no idea your move is “soon.” But then, some days, it goes like that... :o|

Today is National Garlic Day.

And Bicycle Day.

And yes, small dogs. Small BARKING dogs. *double-shudder*

They have been the bane of my existence since I moved in and had a bedroom at the back of my apartment.

Why managers think small dogs are better than large ones is beyond me. Small dogs are nothing but nervous rats. But don’t get me started.

We picked up keys on Friday. The truck comes for the big stuff this Friday.

Since we’re moving across town we’re taking some time. Also, we had to get into the new apartment a little early or lose it.

When a larger breed gets bred smaller then the parts of the brain that can think more clearly are shrunk out.

What’s wrong with medium dogs? Besides the barking? Did I tell you we have a hound in the neighborhood? It’s in one of the homes around here, and every so often, he starts to bay. It sounds gorgeous!

Well, the cookware, cutlery and some of the small appliances are packed. I have three more of the latter to go but they have their separate boxes, which I never tossed when I purchased the items.

Needless to say, I’m worn out. I also need more packing paper. I’ve used up all the plastic grocery bags I had been saving to pack with, so now, I don’t even have enough of those for the bathroom waste basket.

I thought of trying to pack some books but that may or may not take place. it depends on how I feel in a bit. The Lawn Guy just pulled in. I’d go put the windshield cover on the Tracker, but I’m not sure if I even want to bother. I’ll just have to make sure I get up early enough to wash the windshield before I head out to Walmart in the morning.

Which is why I’ve always like standard poodles.

Chihuahuas are nothing more that raptor bait as far as I’m concerned. The more of them that are used for that the better I like them.

If I could find a wire-haired terrier, I’d be happy. Even an Airedale.
