Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I need to go to bed earlier. Maybe tonight ...

I’d like to wake up feeling refreshed, like I’d had a good night’s sleep, just once. It’s been a long time since I did that. Some days, when it takes a little longer than usual to drag myself out of bed, I still get angry about it, but I talk myself out of it because its a useless anger. It won’t solve anything and will only make me sick.

I understand, to some extent!

It’s a nice day here. Maybe I’ll sit out in the yard after church.

Thanks!

I tried to watch church on Zoom but this week, there was no sound at all, even though when I tested it, according to the testing instructions provided by the Zoom program, it worked just fine. It was like watching a goldfish. It was also depressing.

But I found a worship service from the 90s (I think) on TV that was run as a test program, for several years, so I got to listen to a couple of talks and some hymns. I’ll plan on going next week, though it’s the Ward Conference, so I’ll have to go early to get a seat. Or be let in...

It’s only going to be in the 60s again today, but in the 80s tomorrow. I have to go get some keys made for Chuck. He’ll be out this week, but I’ll put the keys in his drop box one of the days when I go to pick up my mail.

Now, I’m tired. Still. I have a couple of things lined up for tomorrow, hoping the residual momentum from doing the laundry might help me get a few more boxes packed. Cookware and small appliances. Maybe some books, if it lasts long enough. Then I’ll have to rest up the next few days. The tired just never ends.

We have a lot to do in the next few days before my mother arrives, which is anticipated for late Thursday.

Will your mother be staying long? She doesn’t, as a rule, does she?

I don’t think my mother liked me very much, but she wrote to me every week, and it’s OK that it was out of duty. She used to send a couple of dollars in every letter, and that was usually enough to feed my Favorite Son for a few days.

There have been times when I wish I could get one more letter from her, even without the money! ;o]

Good morning. Thursday to Sunday, I think. She plans to visit my cousin in Pinehurst after leaving here.

Good morning.

The laundry is done. I found an organic laundry soap that smells like frankincense and myrrh. I hope it cleans as well as it smells!

Now, I just have to go in and hang them up. Then, after a suitable rest, I’ll try to pack up some stuff in the kitchen. The contents of a non-existent “trash drawer” need my attention.

Good morning. There are worse things than frankincense and myrrh!

I slept tolerably well, but I’m already looking forward to nap time.

What a sweet little face!

My Favorite Son and his Perfect Wife called me just about the time I was ready to call it quits, go to bed “early” so I could be asleep before Brian put his new puppy outside, and we ended up talking for an hour and 10 minutes.

They will be going to Italy, Germany and England within the next two years, and they’ll be gone three weeks. No, they didn’t invite me to go. They invited me to house-sit for them. :o|

They actually do sound excited about my coming, and since it was the Perfect Wife who initiated the call, I’m hoping she’s warming to me somewhat. FS said he’s now getting antsy about my move and wants it to happen ASAP. That’s encouraging!

Anyway, I’m going to go wash my face off, then hang up the clothes and let my day “start.” I have to do something before the fatigue takes over again.

...I’m already looking forward to nap time.

I SO know that feeling!! And I don't wish it on anyone. Unless they just love naps and wake up feeling better for having taken one!

I went to bed early, but I was reading a book.

I hope they have a nice trip “in the next two years.”

I do too. They’re losing weight, and really working at it, and this trip is their reward for the weight loss and getting in shape. They’ve gone Keto and are going to the gym three times a week. I’m SO happy to hear that, because of FS’s diabetes.

Working in transportation in Vegas, I used to schedule rides for disabled people. I can’t even tell you how many I came across on a weekly basis who were diabetic and had lost one or both legs, gone blind and/or had heart problems because they didn’t take care of themselves.

I could see my FS going down that same road, and it was super scary. So this is great. If they stick to their diet and exercise program on their trip and when they come back, I’ll consider it a win!

I’ve been trying to read more and get away from playing mahjong in the evenings. I’ve dividing my reading between “Tent Life In Siberia,” and “Back to the Sources.” The latter is an explanation of the Jewish texts, aka, the Torah. I suspect it will throw a whole ne light on the Old Testament when we begin to study it again in 2022.

The idea is just to get away from so much electronics.

I would like to avoid watching television in the evenings. Going to bed with a book makes it more likely that I’ll sleep!

I’ve found myself staying awake much longer than I had intended, just because I was working a mahjong puzzle. I don’t need to do that. Reading guarantees that I’ll sleep, soon!

Good morning.

Happy Monday!

Lots of stuff we don’t need for day-to-day living is in the new place. The dog is very unhappy with how things are here, but she likes it there.
