A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Tom was feeling faint and woozy, nothing very serious. DP took him home, and we’ll get him back together with his car later in the week.
I’m so sorry that you had to deal with ineptitude at the pump.
Happy that Pat got the inspection done on the Avalon and sorry that Tom had such a reaction to the vaccine. It would seem there are more bad reactions than good ones, and I don’t dare have an injection.
Sleep must be something that I don’t deserve. I will have to talk to Chuck tomorrow. Between the new neighbor and his friend and someone’s dog, and Brian and his circle saw, I’m fighting a losing battle. I really hate to be a bad neighbor. BUT.
I learned yesterday that the Johnson & Johnson brand of vaccine causes blood clots, so I won’t be having it because I’ve had three TIAs. They were a lot of years ago, but still...
I doubt if I’ll have the other one, either. Just in case it causes something just as bad.
In other news, redhead has had her meds cut so she no longer has seizures. I didn’t know she’d had them to begin with, but she’s been in my prayers! She said she’s feeling much better, now!
*tagline*
7 cases of blood clots in over 6 million shots, which is fewer than in a random population sample. All of them were in younger women, highly correlated with birth control pills.
But you have other choices of vaccines.
Good morning. I’m glad redhead is better.
Almost all vaccinations are problem-free, but you couldn’t call your parents to get you if you were dizzy!
CFIDS has altered my body chemistry to the point that I don’t dare take most prescription drugs, and something as new as this vaccine would be a little like playing Russian roulette with five bullets instead of one.
I hope you’ll excuse me for not cutting to the head of the line! ;o]
Morning floof is happy to see it’s Hmpf Day!
Good morning.
Arghh... the neighbors!!
The shower has been had, and I may or may not get my hair cut in the next week or two. I don’t like the way it was cut the last time, and have fought with it every time I’ve washed my head out.
I’ve been trying to let it grow a bit so that I don’t look quite so butchered when I come out of Great Clips.
My iHerb order is supposed to be here today, but we shall see. The book boxes didn’t come yesterday, but a replacement Himalayan pink salt grinder did. By FedEx. GAH! I went to use the grinder a few weeks ago and the entire top came off in my scarmabled eggs. I contacted the company, the asked for a photo so they could replace it and presto! New, sealed salt grinder. I hope it works!
I need to walk over and check my mail. I think Not Adam has been on duty because I haven’t gotten any notices.
Was Drama Queen apprised of the arrival of her hoodie?
Totally excused! I just feel like I have to take a stand for statistics.
I haven’t contacted Drama Queen yet. I was too tired yesterday.
Some days are better off without dealing with drama, so its OK.
I got a calendar from Humana. If their program wasn’t so much better than what I had last year, I’d change to something else. They want me to save THEM money by changing from Nitrolingual spray to nitroglycerin tablets. Nope. Not with neuropathy in my fingertips.
Were you actually thinking the person at the register would be able to do the math and figure out how much 15 gallons would cost?
Even with an abacus??
w00t!
7 cases in 6 million causes the FDA to say that particular vaccine should be paused. Even though vaccines are critical to getting back to normal. Even though when you get the vaccine you can’t go back to normal. But you really, really need to get one, as long as there’s not a 7 in 6 million chance that you’ll suffer a bad side effect.
I’m with Tucker. There’s something they’re not telling us.
Happy Wednesday, all.
It is Wednesday, and its another Wednesday closer to AR for me. How much closer is anybody’s guess, but I know it’s closer than it was yesterday!
I guess I thought she could enter 15 gallons into the system and it would calculate the cost. Silly me.
I don’t believe they’ll ever let regular people have normal lives again.
True.
Vlad has been turned over to the driving teacher.
Ah. You mean like it does here, for me, when I just want five gallons.
