A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I don’t like jeans, but it’s fine that other people do, unless they’re family members who think jeans are appropriate for occasions unrelated to yardwork or ordinary hanging around.
Then I might ask, “Are you planning to do some yardwork while we’re at church? That’s nice!” because I’m passive aggressive like that.
Jeans were and are appropriate for Utah. EXCEPT for church. Then one always dresses as if they expected to meet our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Even when I was a practicing Catholic, church attire was the same. I’ve never lost that idea, and I still cringe when I see people in flip-flops. Just. NO! I’ve gotten used to seeing bare legs at church, though if I have no nylons, my choice would be to stay home. But that’s just me, because I don’t like to put my bare feet into heels.
As for jeans, well Nevada was desert, and jeans were appropriate in the winter unless you worked in an office of some kind, and will be appropriate in AR, just because I know what kind of country I’ll be living in — hilly, with lots of rednecks. But I guess I fall into that category, having grown up with cowboys and done my share of rodeo-going and horseback riding.
When we go on our vacation, I’ll probably be in jeans and boots. Not sure what kind of boots, but if I can find a “country-western store,” I’ll have a pair of walking boots, in my closet. ;o]
You just be you and bring what you want!
Jeans were invented for the southwest!
And you will look stuning, I’m sure.
Jeans are what I know!
I just set up my printer to print from my phone, but why, I’m not sure. I may change my mind, but for now...
I’m going to take a pain pill give it a while to work and then pack a few things.
BBL
Choir finished. I’m having a bit to eat and will leave for my vaccine in less than an hour.
Whew!
Four more boxes done and dusted, as well as a set-up for the Fire-stick. If I’m going to pay for Prime, I want my money’s worth.
Next, I’ll try to re-set the Roku, and see what happens. The library isn’t the only game in town, but it’s where I can find the series’ that folks talk about on FB.
However, the packing did me in. I may have to go to Lin’s because I’m out of Lunchables and other stuff, but I need to hurry before it a. Gets too warm, and b. All the Blue Hairs come out to shop.
If I haven’t said it, and I think I did, I set up the wireless printer.
So part of my day has been cerebral and the other part physical. Now I’m tired. I need to pack a few more things like photo frames and things in frames and then I’ll pack up what books I can while I wait for FedEx to get here with the rest of my boxes. They were sent yesterday.
Now off to Lin’s! Good luck with your shot!
You get so much done compared to me. I got my vaccine with no delays, but there was quite a line when I left. DP and Tom have gone to drop James and Vlad off for their science meeting, and then we’ll see what.
I doubt that. I just go into specifics, and you say things like "I'm going to clean {something} in the kitchen/bathroom or do laundry.
Back from Lin's obviously. Today is the day we get rid of the masks. I wore mine going in, saw all the folks without them and took mine off. While I was in there, looking for the Lunchables, I spotted some Colby-Jack cheese. I had already picked up a small tub of red and green grapes, and I have been looking for Colby-Jack for a long time.
I wasn't going to buy any more cheese because I have some in the freezer, but this is just too good! I suspect my weight loss will happen by itself, now, and I'll have to be careful lest I lose too much too quickly. That happens with me. Once I hit a certain point, the metabolism gear kicks in, and I have to force myself to eat.
Oh. And when it comes to packing, I've done it probably 120 times, so I have it down to a science. :o])
I wore myself plumb out, so I’m headed down the hall. See you tomorrow!
I wore myself plumb out, too, and fell down on the bed with Jake. See you tomorrow!
Unngh.
I hate when I do the, “I’m just going to lie here for a minute,” thing. That was almost two hours ago!
Good morning.
Floofy kitteh doesn’t mind the snow ‘cause she has her fur coat on.
I forgot my Rule of Thumb for Dealing With CFIDS: Never do two Units of Physical Activity in two consecutive days, whether it’s running errands or packing or cleaning house.
I didn’t sleep well last night, because I had packed yesterday AND the day before, even though it was only four boxes each time. I need to take better care of myself.
The allergies are adding to the misery, and at the moment, it’s a toss-up as to whether I’ll be going to church or not. Unngh.
Good morning. I went back to bed after posting the kitteh. I had a slight fever, headache, and achy joints starting about 7:30 last night. I’m feeling better now, but I’d probably still be asleep if DP hadn’t sat down in the Best Cat Chair in the bedroom to put his running shoes on. It creaks.
I suspect that’s a reaction to the vaccination. I hope it’s only passing, and that you feel better soon.
Since I couldn’t decide if I would go to church or not, I just put on my old red robe. It’s wearing out and needs to be replaced. Maybe in a smaller size!
Now, however, I’m going to get dressed, but I’ll watch church from home. If I can log into Zoom successfully.
I’m feeling better. Not good, but better. I told DP it was fine: I understand there was nowhere else in the house he could sit to put his running shoes on while I was sick and sleeping. Because sometimes I’m meanly sarcastic like that.
I see nothing wrong with your response. But then, I’m super sensitive to abusive situations, and what he did was inappropriate, to say the least. I’ll shut up, now.
Wow. I’ve spent the last hour trying to find a place that sold robes like the one I have and the selection has been narrowed down from none to nil. I don’t want a tie robe and I don’t want a zip robe, but that seems to be all there is unless I go to pullovers. I don’t want fleece and I don’t want satin.
Just when I thought the robes couldn’t get more ridiculous in style, fabric or price, they did. All of the above.
And now the headache is back.
If it’s not a tie or a zip, what is it? Pull-over? Snaps?
I have a red plaid robe with a tie.
The one I have is snaps, which I like much better than a zipper, especially with neuropathy in my fingers. It’s red plaid flannel, like your robe. Life is hard enough without having to struggle with zippers. I even like buttons. Especially if they’re large enough for me to see and know that my fingers have a good hold on them.
Church was good, but there was still no mention of being released from the mandatory masks. My allergies are still ramped up, with my eyes suffering the most. Tomorrow, the allergy forecast is for 11.6...I didn’t realize the scale went that high, so I’ll be miserable for a while, yet. Unngh.
