Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Well, I moved some record albums so I could pack them and there sat the atlas, 1995 edition, 8.5” x11”. (Post divorce, so Igor can’t be blamed for this one.) Not new enough or big enough for me to see without the laser surgery. Which will happen in AR.

Four more boxes done. Slow, but progress.

Frank has gone off to spend the day with his friend who used to live up the street. Next, I need to get lyrics for Sunday emailed off to Don Fabio, and then I’ll take the teenbros to Walmart and see if we can find them some clothes.

I think I’m done for the day, but maybe not. It depends on whether the allergies get busy. I keep forgetting I’m allergic to the cardboard packing boxes.

Lyrics sent to Fabio. Now I need to round up the byos ... Oh, there they are, right behind me.

Once upon a time I used to waste time on nightly TV. There was a show called “Night Court” that could really make me laugh. The premise was an outgoing mayor had decided to punish the city by appointing people with no legal knowledge as judges and one such was the judge in this show.

One of the judge’s quirks was that he was a serious Mel Torme fan (I had never even heard of Torme before the series). I remember this exchange:

Judge: I have every album Mel Torme ever recorded.
Female: (no response)
Judge: I’m going to marry the first woman who is impressed by that.

So, maybe Vlad is fishing for his future bride when he expresses his love of geography.

The best way to find byos is to try to prepare a snack as quietly as possible so nobody will hear you.

At least, when I was growing up, that would create a chorus of, “Bring me one, too!” calls.

I was a late-comer to “Night Court.” My son used to watch it and would tell me some of the punch lines. As for Mel Torme, well, no comment.

As for geography, I’ve always loved it, so Vlad is in good company.

Aww...the pensive breakfast floof!

Good morning.

Child 1 and Child 2 were keeping me busy and then the mind began to work overtime. It was after 2000 when I finally fell asleep and as a result, it was nearly 0400 when I rolled out of bed this morning. I probably would have logged another hour but for some thumping going on next door.

Anyway, I’m up. I’ve had my shower, but I need to write to Charlie, and get it in the mail. The mail carrier, Not-Adam, brought my keys yesterday, so the lock has been switched out. When I go to mail the letter to Charlie, I’ll drop the bright pink card with two keys attached in Chuck’s drop box, and when I leave, he will have five mail keys for this place. If he has any sense of the fitness of things, he will have two keys made for every box whenever someone moves out. </rant

Once I get the letter written and get some pills cut, I’ll see about packing up more things. Books, maybe.

(Sleeping in messes me over in so very many ways!)

Happy Friday, everyone.

Another quiet night. It’s supposed to get up to 70 today, but then more cool temperatures for the weekend.

Happy Friday!

Does your climate ease into the seasons? Here, it’s like Vegas — a few days of spring, then winter, then spring, then summer, then spring, then winter again. So far this month. ;o]

I’m really happy that puppy had a quiet night. At least, I think that’s what you’re talking about — no seizures. Right?

Good morning. Loud birds here today. I expect we’ll all be rising early on our campout at the end of the month for that reason.

The bros have science things today. There is schedule overlap, so a variety of additional brothers and sisters will be shuffled around by moms-with-vans. I need to print Mapquests to several locations.

Prince Philip has passed away at the age of 99.

The Queen may not be far behind...

I’m not happy with the USPS. The keys they gave me do not fit the lock that was installed yesterday, by Not-Adam, so I have to wait for Adam before I toss out any keys...

*sigh*

No seizures, no drug deals in the complex (not a problem I’m aware of, but this is a college town), no road construction, no family drama.

But most importantly, no seizures. So we’re back to counting weeks and we’ve made it to 1.

Clearly this is Biden’s USPS. But he’ll probably blame it on Trump.

Good gravy.

Back from first trip. Next, Pat is going to take the Avalon over to the auto service at the Walmart, and I’ll pick him up in about half an hour.

We saw that. I hope the Queen makes it a couple more years, just to show people.
