Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Tom is an excellent teacher. He was very popular as a camp counselor. Maybe someday he will be an environmental educator for the national parks or something like that.

Tom being and excellent teacher is not surprising. He no doubt has learned a lot from the examples of his mother!

Adam, the mail carrier, brought my mail AND two new keys for the new lock that he will put in on Monday. I wasn’t able to get Chuck, yesterday, but since Adam will most likely see him Monday, he will know about the new lock. I shouldn’t have to pay for the fact that there were no spares, because Chuck didn’t take the time to have any made. </rant

I support the rant!

I’ve listened to several podcasts and done a lot of cleaning. Just a few more things before I say, “Close enough for government work.”

DP and Tom are doing the shopping.

While Adam was standing outside, yesterday, we both watched as pollen fell like snow from the trees above us. The bees are going to be very, very busy!

I will go to Lin’s today and get the Claritin and a cucumber. I can’t remember feeling so miserable and still being upright. I wish I had some goggles...

Those little squees make the best morning floofs!

Good Easter morning!

I’ve had the shower and now I’m fighting the symptoms again. If I can get out before the sun is up, I can get the Claritin and a cucumber and be back before the pollen starts in earnest today. I may end up going to Walmart, but in either case, I refuse to suffer one more day with symptoms as horrible as yesterday’s.

I hope your quest for relief is a success.

DP and Tom discussed running this morning, but I don’t know what they’ll do. I’ve done dishes and laundry and cat care.

I found what I needed at Lin’s, and I’m glad I went there instead of Walgreen’s. They have house brands that are much cheaper, though Walmart would have been better for prices. I got eyedrops, and I’m waiting for the swelling to go down.

My eyes feel like two burn holes in a blanket.

I’m glad you found something. The eye doctor the boys saw last week said Zaditor and Pataday (generic names) are the best drops.

I’ll look for them when I go to Walmart on Tuesday. I just needed something to break this awful feeling of helplessness in the onslaught of Killer Pollens.

I don’t blame you. I’ve had some horrible seasons, myself, especially in San Antonio.

Las Vegas is notorious for allergies. If you’ve never had them, you’ll develop them within the first three years you live there. All I ever got were sniffles and the occasional itchy eyes.

Last year, here, it was a runny nose and itchy eyes for maybe a week, but tolerable, and no meds were needed. From January to now, we’ve had over 7” of rainfall (including snow) and that’s more than double what it was last year. So of course, the pollens are hideous. They were exploding off the trees in clumps yesterday.

The wind needs to come and blow them all to CA.

Del Rio was almost like no allergies at all for me, and that was 120 miles from San Antonio.

Tucson wasn’t too bad, either, no matter how many times we lived there.

My buddy in Phoenix said all the midwesterners who moved in brought all their plants and shrubs with them to the desert.
