Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Various things accomplished. I phoned Anoreth to wish her a happy 30th birthday. She said next week is mid-terms and her classes are very hard, but she might go out this evening. (I think she’s in denial about being 30 ;-).

“Lunch-time-ish,” maybe 12:30, I’ll text my friend who has Kathleen to see how things are going. DP has gone for a run. I could go sit on a lawn chair and read a book.

Congratulations on the Various Things Accomplished!

Happy Birthday to Anoreth! Thirty is a good age!! Will she be celebrating with the Older Brothers?

I just managed to pack two boxes of books but I will need to order another 20 boxes because this didn’t even clear of one shelf. Are you interested in “Jesus Through the Ages?”

I think I’ll try to pack one more box and then call it quits because Back.

I think I won’t have time for much reading for a while, darnit. I miss it. (I’m already tired and the day is barely beginning.)

I’d like to treat myself to a pizza, but it will have to wait until payday. Of course, by then, I will have forgotten that I even earned one.

*tagline*

OK, one more box did it for me, and now I ask, are you interested in Khalil Gibran?

I rearranged a bit, but it doesn’t look any better.

Maybe she’ll go out with us if we take Bill out for his birthday, around the 6th.

No interest in Kahlil Gibran.

Do you mean “Jesus through the Centuries”?

The very one. It was out of my sight, so I disremembered.

KG is in the donate pile. Where shall I put “Jesus?”

Are you interested in political/American histories? European wars?

Yes on Jesus Through the Centuries, and I’m interested in histories and wars.

Sorry about the delay. I was out doing yardwork. Now I need a shower! Tom and DP have gone to get Kathleen. It looks like we might have a thunderstorm.

OK. I’m glad I asked about the histories and wars because I’ll find another box and just ship the books separately. The other stuff has a better chance of actually getting mailed this next week!

See ya tomorrow!

Tomorrow, let me know titles on the histories and wars. I may have some already.

What a perfect morning floof! Thanks!

Good morning.

I was just drifting into the deeper part of sleep when something brought me to alert status. It was a vibration that I heard more than felt, but I couldn’t seem to locate the source of it. By the time I realized it was something in Rocky’s apartment, I was so wide awake it wasn’t funny.

I think I got a total of five hours of sleep. Maybe six. But I was exhausted to begin with and feel even worse. The shower didn’t help much. So I’m just waiting to see if I’ll go to church or not. I can watch from here but that’s not nearly as gratifying.

Good morning. Rain began here about 1:00 a.m. I got up and closed the windows, then went downstairs and let Jake in, having recalled that I let him out right before I went to bed.

I’m feeling rather unnngh this morning after the yardwork. I was considering working on my remaining mulch before church, but now discussions are going on regarding Sally’s birthday cake, which Vlad can’t make because of Driver’s Ed all day.

May I have a pat on the back for my success in not having a meltdown, yet, today?

I’ll give you a pat on the back and throw in a hug for good measure. And there are more where that one comes from!

I’m sorry your yardwork has produced some unnngh. There is a similar condition here after packing yesterday, even though it was minimal and short-lived.

Sorry, but I prefer not to make a cake for Sally. One can always get a quarter sheet cake at Walmart, in a pinch... ;o]

If there’s something pretty in the clearance-bakery section, I’ll get it. If not, we can bake a cake. Vlad could probably do it on his lunch break.

They’re not coming for supper, only for cake.

I need some vegetables anyway, and Shannon says it’s far too wet to work outside.

I sometimes think I want to buy a cake, but I might be better off getting one of those frozen Sara Lee cakes. Tasty enough to fill the the urge but not big enough to keep it longer than for a slice or two. The rest of it can go to the clubhouse.

I agree with Shannon.

Although it’s supposed to be close to 70° today. Maybe over that.

The cake is in the oven. It will be done before we leave for church.

YAY!

I wanted to fall asleep here. Now I need to remember to get to the website to watch church...

I just happened to think. Sharon’s explanation for why people act the way they do is “anxiety.” Doesn’t matter the person or the manifestation, it’s caused by “anxiety.” :o]) She’s got a way of putting a lot of things into perspective!

You can call it “anxiety” or “entropy” or say, “Maybe it’s their bowels.”

I could fall asleep if given the opportunity, but there isn’t, so I’ll have more caffeine.

Well, that was a wash. I tried to get on from the time I posted last and kept getting kicked out again. I don’t know what the deal is, but it was very frustrating.

I’ll try not to be too tired to attend in person any more, at least until I get moved. My Favorite Son seems to have the Zoom meetings down to a science so if nothing else, I can watch at his house.

Entropy is high in these parts today, too. All we can do is wait for it to flux. As it were.

I’m being very good about not having a meltdown. Maybe there will be time for it tomorrow.
