A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

U2.
Things are definitely smoothing out. Apparently, old people’s fractures can heal quite nicely, PTL.
That’s great news!
I made an appointment for a haircut at noon. It has been far too long.
I need to go back and have them layer my hair this time, but it will have to wait until payday, because I want it to grow just a bit more. The last time, the gal shaved my neck and I absolutely HATE when they do that. I didn’t know she was doing it until I heard the clippers and then it was too late.
I just braved the cold wind and walked over to mail the update papers for an agency and was ALMOST home when a neighbor caught me and asked me if I wanted to sell the Tracker. We talked for a few minutes and I told him to tell me what he felt he could pay, knowing it needed a valve replacement.
I came back in out of the wind (DANG! it’s cold!) and just got ready to take my next dose of pills when I got a text alert. Then I remembered the chicken had finished thawing (I think finished) and that I should probably get things ready to roast it tomorrow, and the thought crossed my mind that he doesn’t really want to buy the Tracker. He wants me to give it to him.
I don’t know. Two guys want it, now, so that will take some research. I know I won’t get much out of it, but I need to get something for it, anyway. The last time I checked (a couple of weeks ago?) KBB listed it as $850+/- resale with the work that needs done on it. Which is not too bad when you think of it! I think he said “around $400” but with the wind and the traffic noise and his soft voice, it was hard to tell.
Ah, nuts. The lawn guy is here. UNNGH!
I had pounds of hair removed. I no longer look like Albert Einstein!
Bill the Cardinal and Tom the Mocker are both at the top of the poplar tree, singing as loudly as they can. Tom has a wide variety of tunes, while Bill has twoop-whoop-whoop, which is very piercing.
Well, after your cacophony concert, you must be ready for a nap with a cat!
Haircuts are always good for what ails us because they make us feel pampered.
Which you were you referring to, you?
Glad to hear it. If I’m not already your age I hope to be.
NICE!!!!!!!
Hah! All of the above!
I made the podiatrist appointment for Friday morning.
All six of our Envirothon teams qualified for state competition. Woo-hoo ... the bros all get cake!
Congratulations to the bros, and good for you getting your foot seen so soon!
I hope your night is a great one!
I’m thinking of cake!
I would think of cake but I’d end up tossing half of it.
Right now, I’m going to go put my chicken in the slow cooker and wait for the smell to permeate the place. Rosemary-garlic rub. :o]
At least with chicken, I can share with my diabetic Rocky neighbor!
Oooh...another pastel marmalade kitteh!
I finally ran out of black ink. I got the icon notice that it was time to change ink cartridges but each time i would print, I’d select black ink only. That was three weeks ago. There have been a lot of pages pass through the printer since then!
I’ve been using black only because I can’t seem to get the print heads clean. I’ll try once more in a bit. Better yet, I’ll wait until the sunlight comes through the open door.
