A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I had been forcibly retired due to illness almost a year when I turned 55. Nobody should have to retire that young if they don’t want to.
I am so cold!!
I turned on the fake fire when I got up.
Leaving in a few minutes for the DMV with Vlad, after checking his teeth carefully.
It appears to be “Escape to the Chateau”.
Good morning. Happy Wednesday. Happy St. Patrick’s Day. I’m sure there are other things to celebrate today. Enjoy!
I always celebrate being able to wake up in my own bed, to find that no catastrophes have happened to me during the night. It could happen.
Happy St Paddy’s Wednesday!
Wow. I never knew there were so many streaming TV channels! Of course, my highest cost is the internet, and I’d probably only save $20-30 by going to streaming TV. But then, I wouldn’t have to go to the library, either, since I can’t order online any more.
I got rid of Firefox, which I thought was the reason, but Edge is worse, so I don’t know where to look. Firewall, maybe?
The Chateau series was seven years, so it may be worth watching, but there were only a few episodes a year. Now I’m thinking...not a good sign — it always gets me into trouble. ;o]
I’m sorry, but my body can’t handle whiskey. Kinda like Kim Basinger in “Blind Date.”
But thanks, and happy Irish day to you! I’ll celebrate my heritage!
Good morning again. I want to go to a chateau and drink whiskey!
Vlad got an ID card - well, a promise that one will be mailed eventually - and my fellow citizens freezing in the drizzle on the doorstep of the DMV plotted the overthrow of the government by force or subversion.
They always seem to wait until they're on the steps of the DMV before plotting that perpetual, unfinished overthrow.
At least Vlad is legal, now.
One lady figured she had nothing better to do than ask to see the station supervisor to explain that the person at the door was incredibly rude. It probably didn’t do any good, but she got to go inside and get her feet warm, maybe even use the bathroom.
There were dots on the cement where the petitioners were supposed to stand and wait, but at one point, some people were in a line at least six feet apart but not on the dots, and the woman stuck her head out the door and barked, “You have to stand on the dots!”
Some people just aren’t happy unless they’re complaining.
As for the gal who yelled out the door about standing on the dots, she probably showers with her mask on.
They are absolutely loo-loo at the Monroe DMV.
I think the people here will be more than happy for the mask mandate to be lifted. It can’t happen too soon for me.
It’s a nuisance.
The clerks in the stores don’t wear their masks much, these days.
I’ve been trying to clean the print heads for the last hour and I’m still not getting very far. Only black and yellow are visible and those aren’t the colors I need.
I think I’ve run through the program six times. Unngh.
Try a spot of rubbing alcohol wipe over the print heads...works well on ball gel pen points that have sat around too long.
Ymmv
My family was thinking only 3 episodes per year but apparently the count goes up.
Yep, that looks about right. At least for the first few years, anyway. A lot of them increase the episode count when the shows begins to gain in popularity.
Print heads are located where? I mean, I know where to put the cartridges in but I don’t know where the print heads are located in relation to the cartridge chamber.
Will I see them if I take the back off?
