Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Shannon is very happy about the warmer weather, which allows her to lie in the gardens, invisibly, thinking about killing things.

I also have to go to Walmart today to pick up my prescription for the colonoscopy prep. Unnngh.

Shannon deserves to lie in the gardens, invisibly, in the sun with murder on her mind. All she needs is a cottage covered in ivy...

I don’t know why they don’t sell that prep OTC. I mean, who in their right minds would buy it because it was fun?

It’s raining again.

Admiral Fitz says it’s gloomy all the way around. The barometer, however, wishes to argue and say that good weather is here.

I made an appointment this afternoon for Shannon to get her blood tested. She will hate me, but what’s new.

Kitteh is imbizibo this Friday Eve, so how can we watch? He’s wearing ghillie gear!

Shannon has to hate someone, and you’ll be handy. Besides. It’s in the Kitteh Rule Book.

One of the skills one develops as a Project Manager is to watch for attacks from people you can’t see coming.

Which reminds me of one of those Chuck Norris jokes: If you can see Chuck Norris, Chuck Norris can see you. If you can’t see Chuck Norris, you may be only minutes away from a quick and brutal death.

Moms have that skill, as well...

Yes, I believe that’s accurate about Chuck Norris!

I have occasionally wasted time on movies with lots of car chases and explosions. There was one such series (I can’t remember the name) in which Chuck Norris appeared for a cameo.

One of the other characters said, “I heard you’d been bitten by a rattlesnake.” Norris replied, “Yes, and after 2 weeks of fevers, chills, and severe pain, the rattlesnake died.”

I didn’t like that movie well enough to continue with the series (I’m not sure it went on) but I thought it was hysterical that they wove in one of those jokes and even had Norris deliver it.

Long, long ago I worked with someone who was involved with martial arts tournaments for kids. Norris was a grand marshal at one of those events and the co-worker got to meet him. He said Norris was a great person for a celebrity - very down-to-earth.

Chuck Norris got his movie start in B Movies, but like Steven Segal, he made a fortune out of it. (Segal now releases them directly to DVD, finding they sell like hotcakes and increase his fortune exponentially.)

I’ve always liked Chuck Norris because he doesn’t cuss in his movies, and he always has time for kids. He is very good about poking fun at himself, too. I suspect his TV series, “Walker, Texas Ranger” will always have an audience in TX, and will air as long as there are Texans to watch it.

A word of advice. Never ask, “What’s up, Chuck?” to Norris.

Chuck Norris was 81 yesterday.

Shannon has gained more than a pound.

Good morning, happy Friday, and it’s always good to have a scary kitteh in your corner.

Sorry about the delay. I slept in and the rest of the time got away from me, what with a shower and a letter to Charlie and the surprise of the day — I stepped out the door to take the letter over to the clubhouse, and was met with snain...snow and rain.

I wasn’t expecting anything but took the mailbox key, anyway, and found a card with a bat stamp and a cardinal return address. Happy day! Great combination! I wonder how it slipped through the clutches of the USPS personnel? *face palm* USPS said it all...

Anyway, happy wet morning.

I called AR yesterday, and I’m #3 on the list, and I also learned a few things about living there. Parking isn’t assigned, like it is here, but there are three handicapped spaces available; the floors are tile, except for the bedroom, but it’s the same way here. And gloriosky, the laundry room is open 24-7 so I “can wash clothes at two in the morning, if you want to!”

I’ll call her again next month and ask her a few more questions.

I was able to get the storage closet mostly sorted, then some other things packed, but the weather is taking it’s toll on me, so I don’t know how much will get done today.

I’m glad you noticed the bat stamp. I think they were a Hallowe’en special, but still available on USPS.com.

Sorry about your snain. It’s a very pleasant day here, weather-wise, although quite frustrating teenbro-wise.

Congratulations on getting useful things done. I seem to do so very little every day, and yet, it would cost a fortune to hire someone else to do all this nothing. Life is weird.
