A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

And apps for phones with stars in them turns the page.
Poor catballs!
So neglected and abused! If they had opposable thumbs, you’d be in real trouble!
W00t!
Good job, ArGee!
I’ve seen people using those apps at camp several times.
My professional manner is fraying. It is within the realm of possibility that I may do something drastic in the hear future.
Did you guys know that when you’re watching a video or playing an instrument, the sound is audible to other people nearby, not just to you?
Absolutely!
Funny you should mention that. Sharon, Jerry and I were sitting in a back pew yesterday, but because of the seating arrangements, the overflow area was open and there were several families there. When one of yesterday's speakers got up to talk, Sharon and I kept hearing this noise but couldn't make out what it was.
It stopped for a few minutes, then the second speaker got up and the noise started again. Somebody's kid, way in the back had an electronic game going with the sound on.
It took a while for Sharon and I to figure it out, but by then the second speaker was almost done. People can be so rude.
It’s like they think they’re in a cone of silence. And if you shut the door, they act all insulted, which raises the suspicion that they’re doing it on purpose.
Like I said, my professional manner is fraying.
I read a story to Frank and Kathleen. Next, if we can every get everyone arrayed in one area, we’ll do more Shakespeare. Duke Humphrey of Gloucester’s enemies accused his wife of witchcraft, and the historical sources, such as they are, suggest it’s possible she was seeing a hedge-witch of some kind in the hope of having a baby (not to harm the king).
Cats are evil when we’re in the room, unless they want something. They DO get their feelers hurt very frequently and often, set themselves up for it to happen so they can act all insulted.
I was falling asleep, so I got up and went into the bedroom to bag a few things. I’ll go in again in a little while. It will give me a chance to weed out more clothing. I refuse to take any more items than I absolutely have to.
Maybe in a while, I’ll build another very small box and pack it with some paperback books.
Duchess Eleanor called Duke Humphrey a sniveling weakling, in quite a subtle way. I approve.
That’s the art of diplomacy! I love it when the giver is so adept that the receiver will be thankful for the compliment!
I just got off the chat feature with U-Haul, and with luck, they will be able to correct the address before FedEx picks it up.
I’m getting to the point that I dread Mondays, once I get back from the laundry room.
The only good thing about this particular Monday so far is a piece of mail from the southeast-almost-coast. It has another T-rex stamp on it, which is so cool!
You said the cone of silence was ready!
I did not.
Oh, yes you did. You said the cone of silence was the shizzle!
I’m out of T-Rex stamps. I used the last two to mail magazine articles to Anoreth and Bill.
Isn’t it time to get an I-Rex stamp?
This was mailed on Friday, which is “fast” for a change. Maybe the USPS is flying them over the Midwest these days to avoid the worst of the bad weather.
Anyway, all I got last week was bills, so this is a bright spot!
A tiny amusing ...
Jake went out in the rain. Now he’s wet and mad.
And of course it’s your fault, sez Jake.
Both cats are blaming me for the rain. Also, I’m not giving them meat right now. Shannon is crouched on the kitchen mat, hating. I almost think I feel a breeze as waves of animosity roll over me!
Yeah. I get it.
When I called U-Haul (they work from home) and when the gal answered, I could hear a very loud cat in the background, yowling.
Come to find out, the kitteh is one of two the woman had, the other having died a week ago. This one has been calling for him ever since. I felt so bad for the kitteh and her mommie.
*tagline*
I just tried to order some DVDs from the library and nothing is showing up, so I’m going to give up on this Monday and head down the hallway.
Sorry Ganag, but the stresses are messing with me too much.
Ta
I hope you have a good night!
We have sunshines!!!!
