Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

Posted on 10/20/2020 9:33:20 PM PDT by BenLurkin

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I just read Wikipedia’s blurb on Arkansas and it seems like a rather diverse state, and surprisingly, it’s a Red State. Maybe that will help to convince Favorite Daughter to move there. Her work environment can’t possibly be as hostile in AR as it is in Coloradistan.

Arkansas is relatively warm because of it’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, though the weather is fairly erratic. That’s OK. We were in MO for three years, VA for a year and TX for three years. I’ll handle whatever I have to!

Sorry! I didn’t mean to do that!

I was cleaning the cat box and running the vacuum and stuff, so you were welcome to it.

Arkansas is surprisingly nice, like some other places, such as Oklahoma. You wouldn’t have it as your dream place to live, but once you get there, it’s really okay.

I’m trying to decide if I want to clean the stove before I take a shower. What do you think?

Arkansas was not my first choice to spend my dying days, but the opportunity has presented itself and therefore, I gonna dood it!

I wrote a letter to my Favorite Daughter, extolling the virtues of said state, ie; Conservative, Right-to-work state, scenery, proximity to Branson, etc. I emailed it, trying to let her know that if she’s concerned about how things are shaping up where she is, the logical thing is to move someplace where people are friendly.

I, for one, don’t believe in sweaty, dirty work AFTER I’ve gotten squeaky clean and smelling good. So clean the stove beFORE you take that shower!

The problem is that people keep showing up and using the stove!

Maybe I’ll clean the stove tomorrow, instead. I usually do it Saturday morning, but I was working on music stuff yesterday.

Yeah, I’d wait... Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow!

The sun is shining, but the barometer and Admiral Fitz say it’s not going to last long. The weather is pretty weird this year. Can you imagine a -32° in Minot — for a high? *shudder*

Ohyes... I also got two letters sent off in emails, one to each of my children. Granted, they were short, as my letters go, but at least the Favorite Children know they’ve been thought about today.

Maybe I should write one more letter, in email...

That sounds like an extremely interesting book. Speaking of books, I’ve decided to give you all my history books when I die. And biography. I think they’re about the only things you’d be interested in.

I could even send some now — the ones I’ve read, anyway. That is, if you’re interested.

Don’t die - I have lots of history books available in the library!

If you send me some snaps, I might see something I would want to read and keep.

I just sent two pics. I think one of the books is yours and maybe two, which you’ll get in any case, but...

I have to move some stuff to take a photo of the last shelf in that bookcase.

So. The pain the last two days has worn me out, and now, I need to go to bed, even though its early. I’ll see you tomorrow...

The storm in the Midwest has knocked out the power to my Favorite Son and his wife. Whatever else is going on, I’m going to miss it.

Tent Life in Siberia.”

Solzhenitsyn writes about that.
Not to bad once the fire is going in the stove. *cough*

It’s a beautiful cat, isn’t it? It lives in Taiwan.

“Tent Life in Siberia” is about an American expedition (1865-67) in aid of running telegraph lines across the Bering Strait and Asiatic Russia to Western Europe. They got the Atlantic Cable working before this really got going, but meanwhile, these guys, mostly Civil War vets, were the first Americans to live among the Natives and Russians in Siberia.

It’s fascinating, and soooooo cooooooold.

Here, it is in the 30s F and raining, again, still. We had a good turnout for Mass anyway, almost as many as last Sunday, when it was sunny.

How is England?

I hope you have a good night and stay warm and free from pain. I’ll look over the books and send you a note (and some postage) if I see any I want.

Another book to find. Thanken you.

Blighty has been below zero for the last week with wind and snow.
Supposed to warm up a bit tomorrow.
The Thames is largely back in its slot and behaving again. The willow trees by the weir have ice bills the size of milk bottles (1 Pint) hanging on them.

A quarter of the country has now been Pfizered.
If you catch our version of the bug don’t worry the body recognises it and attacks it. But it is as transmissible as Mud on Carpet.

We’ve been promised local elections in May .

Dover Publications sells a nice paperback reprint.

Best wishes on your vaccinations and your elections! My mother got two doses of some version and will probably be planning travel in March. Elen, USMC, was getting vaccinated, too. The rest of us, they’ll never get to, but the resident household had it, and the others can fend for themselves.

I’m going nowhere near that toxic sludge.
Parents have had it ,after some debate they decided there was nothing to loose.
Those who have already had the Bug in all it’s glory have reported bad side effects. The immune system attacks it like it means it.
If a booster is needed in say ten years I’ll go with either the O’AZ or Sputnik.
Sputnik is work of deranged genius. If you get time the Lancet article on it is worth a browse. Was assuming it was just Vodka in a syringe, but no.(!)

Interesting set of options.

Tomorrow is “Presidents’ Day,” so nothing will happen. On Tuesday, I’m going to the podiatrist. I’m tired of my foot hurting all the time. I hope they can do something.
