Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Our governor wanted to close all the churches, but a Federal circuit court judge said they had to have the same rules for churches as for any similarly-sized facility.

I haven’t had any Zeros (or MiGs, either!) for a long time, so I just figured I’d go for it. But it will be a while before I try for another. Most of the ones I’ve gotten recently were “unconscious,” but still, someone else needs a turn! :o])

We’re limited to 150, as well, but I don’t think they would actually tell us to go home if 200 showed up.

I’ll be glad to see the masks go, but what I’m afraid of is an explosion of diseases once the masks come off. That’s going to be a little difficult for me to take. It was all so senseless, in the first place.

Just as I was about ready to call it a day, the doorbell rang. It was one of the gals from church, checking up on me, and bringing me a loaf of homemade banana bread. We took a few minutes to catch up and I told her of the mold in this place and she said I should “turn them in to the government.” I probably will when I get ready to move, but I’ll tell Chuck about it once more. And then I’ll have to warn him, because I think Rocky suffers from it, too.

So. I’m outta here for the day.

That was actually rather clever, I thought, although it took me a minute to figure it out.

I really need a haircut. I look like Albert Einstein.

I need to rest, for sure. Tomorrow is laundry day, and maybe a trip to Walmart, as well. We’ll see...

Good one. James, my 17-year-old son, has Little Lord Fauntleroy curls - perfect corkscrew ringlets - and he refuses to get it cut or even pin it out of his face.

James? With ringlets? Oh. My. Stars!

The kid who always looked like the Tough Guy, and he has ringlets at 17? Gloriosky.

OKden. Maybe he’ll have a Life Event that will change his mind on their growth.

He keeps it clean, or I would invite Tom over to squash him while I went after it with sewing shears. It could be even prettier than Tom’s hair, if it was styled in some way other than over his face.

He’ll have to do something with it for summer camp staff. They won’t let him go around like a blind sheepdog.

Morning floof sez, “Waddya lookin’ at?”

Good morning.

The laundry is done, and once again, I found someone in the laundry room. Well, their clothes were in the dryer, so it wasn’t as bad as last time. But it was OK because it was a dryer I don’t use very often and wouldn’t be using today, anyway.

Sleep wasn’t all that good, but I was having a very pleasant dream when I woke up. Which I really didn’t want to do.

Still, I feel better than I did yesterday. I’ve decided to wait for tomorrow to go to Walmart, because I have errands to run today, and I don’t like to crowd too much into my day. I always end up paying for it for the next few days.

I’ll go hang the clothes in a bit, but for now, I need to just sit. When I got back, I decided to go through the stuff in my file sorter because yesterday, I got an email with a calendar from Family Search, with all the important dates of my relatives.

I knew this, but it didn’t register with me until I read it that my dad was born in Utah Territory. Wow. Anyway, I decided it needed it’s own place and set about to make it.

So it took about 30 minutes and here I am...
