A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

It’s 28° F here...just when I had hopes of spring. The barometer is dropping which explains why I feel the way I do. But it’s getting light outside, so that’s something. Maybe I’ll feel better when the sun comes up.
It’s above freezing here and raining and miserable. Jake and I are really gripy! I need to organize my music pages for today, and then maybe I’ll clean something.
The spaghetti was thinking about getting a perm, but decided it would look too fusilli.
I’m sorry you feel gripy!
Today is National Periodic Table Day, and also Wave Back At Your Neighbor Day.
Feeling any better?
;o])
I said Hi to the Upnorth People next door when I went out to shoo a squirrel off the bird feeder. Maybe I’ll look at the periodic table later. The sun has appeared, so Jake and I are feeling a little better.
The sun is out here, as well, but I’m not feeling much better. I should be heading out the door to church, but it’s not going to happen, today. So I’m watching some Murdoch Mysteries. Nothing like his cute face to make one feel better. ;o]
And his big, brown eyes and straight, white teeth. *sigh ...*
I’m really going to organize my music pages, and then I’ll have lunch.
I went to find some tomato soup for lunch and it seems every can I pulled out looking for a can of soup behind it was past the “best by” date. So while I was stuck with my head in the pantry shelves, I just grabbed some grocery bags and put the canned goods in them. On my way to the laundry room in the morning, I’ll put them in the dumpster.
I couldn’t find that elusive single can of tomato soup which I wanted to heat up and make a grilled cheese sandwich to go with it.
So, I’ll see what else I can find. I’m starting to get hungry, now, and then I’ll get cranky. And I hate when I get cranky.
You can still have the grilled-cheese sandwich.
Yes, that I will. Or something similar. Meanwhile, I must forage...
I’m off to church. Wish you were here!
We currently have strong wind, light snow and -1.
The Thames (Tems) has been out of its trough for the last week, as a result many of the medieval river crossings are closed. But it does look good ,a bridge in the middle of a lake.
Have just been out, it took three goes to find an open bridge. The police are closing the roads really quickly this year....spoilsports.
Church is open? Wow.
Thanks! By the time I found where I had stashed the link, church was over with.
Sunshine and 45° F here. Not much wind, just the usual 4-8 mph.
Very slowly, through watching so many British murder mysteries, I’m learning how to pronounce British words. Well, at least some of them! Others sound right in my head but don’t roll off my tongue the way they should.
I’m very sorry about you not being able to find an open bridge. For such a small island, England sure does have a lot of rivers!
Found a crossing on the third try. This area is a mass of waterways, some of them man made.
To get the accent you require try flattening your tounge and moving it slightly forward when you speak. More of a French sound ,it removes the rrrrrrrrrrrr .
Also try talking with the bass turned off. Like a loud whisper. :)
Wow. Thanks! If I thought I could do that and get away with it, I’d work on it. But I may try it when someone isn’t looking and surprise you with the results... ;o]
Yes, since like last June, with various limits and kerfluffles. We probably had 200 people at the Spanish Mass today, even though we’re only supposed to have 150. Our pastor pretends he doesn’t notice.
If there were any snitches from the government ... well, if a whole row of people says they’re all one family, it’s racist to argue, right?
Yes, but how will the Church Police decide who is to stay and who is to
Go?
