Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I just saw something interesting on MarketWatch. Here it is ..."& amp ;" ...but without the extra spaces.

You use an ampersand to signal the HTML that you want to print an ampersand. You know ampersand, it looks like this &

Or like this &

I don't amperstand it.

Must not have been posting to HTML. But why HTML the instruction to print an ampersand? An overabundance of geekiness?

I am extremely wary of ampersands. How hard is it to write “and”?

I used to write “Mr and Mrs” with the “and” at a slant because some in my family have very long names. Now, I mostly use the ampersand, but only when I write addresses on envelopes — nowhere else.

So I use them both, but “and” is preferable to “&.” So much for my unasked-for input! ;o]

That little floof looks like he has a crease from his left eye to the top of his head, where a few hairs are a shade darker. What a sweet face!

Good morning.

Wow. The shower has been had and a letter to Charlie has been writ along with two thank you cards, one of them belated. I have another two to write (both belated) but I guess it’s never too late to say “thanks!” I hope not, anyway.

I may get some actual shredding done today, if I get busy on it. I need to walk over and put the mail in the out-going box so folks can get their mail in a timely manner.

A good portion of my day yesterday was spent texting with my Favorite Daughter, and the end result is that she is going to try the Keto diet to help her control her diabetes. It’s the closest thing I’ve seen to a hypoglycemic diet, so it should work for her. I emailed her a shopping list, but didn’t tell her that if it’s not on that list, to stay away from it. Since being in AA, she’s taken her life seriously, and approaches everything with the idea of overcoming it or making it work in her favor. Massive, delightful change!!

It’s easy for you to have a Favorite Daughter, because it’s only the one!

Believing you can make positive changes in your life is a very helpful mindset. As someone in WW once said (quoting or misquoting someone else), “If you believe you can’t, you’re right. If you believe you can, you’re right.”

It’s rainy here. The cats have gone back to bed. I need to send some emails about the Spanish Lent retreat next weekend. DP said the extended forecast is a “major snowstorm” next weekend. I said, “It will be what it will be, and I think that’s all that can usefully be said about it,” and he got offended.

Friday doesn’t help. Every day is the same. I wonder how much plane tickets to Colombia cost.

During the past week, said flights to Bogota were $112 one way $264 RT. Are your bags packed, yet?

Yes, but it would have been my Favorite Son since his birth had I not adopted my Favorite Daughter, so, there is that...

It’s remarkable to see the changes she made since her father passed, and she has been able to see the negative impact he had on her life. (The negative impact was on all three of us who were living with him.) She’s become who (whom?) she was meant to be.

Cold and windy here. I want to go back to bed. It ain’t gonna happen. That “major snowstorm” must be the one that skirted us. (Large egos bruise easily.)

It IS Friday. I know because I just wrote and mailed a letter to Charlie.

Is the snow melting in your neck of the woods?

If you really want, I can find out for you. My daughter used to do missions trips to Colombia regularly. She had some thoughts about the wisdom of paying more to go non-stop instead of having a layover in Panama. Something about the number of questionable characters who stopped in Panama en route to/from the US.

It’s too cold for the snow to melt. Mrs. ArGee was commenting the other day that she’d forgotten what it was like when the snow stayed on the ground all winter.

The latest forecast/prognostication (forgnosticast?) is for more snow. It says we’ll get a coating today, an inch or two on Sunday, and 8-12 inches on Tuesday. Woah! What? Another foot on Tuesday?

Why did I look?

You looked because your curiosity overwhelmed you. Or overtook you. So now, thanks to you and your snowy forecastigation, I don’t feel so bad about winter in my neck of the woods. ;o]

The weather is one of the things about which I can do nothing and therefore don’t devote much attention. When it’s important, like, “Will we need coats?” I check on it.

No one can do anything about the weather except uncover or cover up. Forty percent of the world may believe man can do something about “climate change,” but God has been controlling it for billions of years and will continue to do so in spite of what other people think.

I’m with you: Will I need a coat? If I’m walking will I need a hat or an umbrella? Otherwise, it’s just there.

I got about half the stack of paperwork shredded before the shredder began to get warm, but now that it’s had time to cool off, I have to get back at it. I’m tired of the mess.

Congratulations! I have some church projects ongoing, but I’m waiting for some tech assistance from one of my committee members, so that will have to be wrapped up later.

Regarding the weather forecast, I should have said, “Huh!” in the “Acknowledging you said something!” tone I used with Sally. Practice, practice, practice ...

Everyone’s being in the house all the time is getting really difficult. I’d cut off my left arm if it would get the libraries open for normal use.

Yes, I’d feel the same way about my left arm if Walmart would go back to 24/7 so I could shop at 0400 again.

Yes, it would seem “Huh” would be an appropriate response that is non-committal for those with cabin fever.

My right knee is kicking up again and I don’t understand it.
