A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I would have to deny for sure. Especially at my age.
Same.
We just finished getting things squared away for Trash Day, and we’ll start Shakespeare in about 15 minutes.
W00t!!
He who hesitates is last.
;o])
I’ll be heading for Walmart as soon as I get their text.
I’ll try the delivery soon, but not just yet. I like being in the store because of the walking I get to do. I’m sure I won’t have a choice before too much longer.
We finished “Henry VI, Part I.” Next, we’re going to the library to pick up books.
I’m back from Walmart and I think I’m disappointed in the entire “do your grocery shopping online” kind of thing. I like shopping for other things, though, and, in fact, prefer it.
But keeping me out of the store this way isn’t good for me psychologically. I need to see shiny new things, even if I don’t need them and couldn’t afford to buy them, anyway. I need to walk the aisles and greet the stalkers and the other Walmartians to make me feel like I just might have made someone feel good by recognizing them.
Next week, I’ll shop in the store myself.
Her full name is Ceirdwyn Trioblaid.
Ceirdwyn, variant of Ceridwyn, means “crooked woman”.
Trioblaid means “trouble”.
Well, you started it...I mean, the Flying Castle thing, what with all the Habitats and. . . and . . . a-
*ahem*
So, how have you been, Bob?
Just when you least expect it, the Undead Thread lurks around every corner!
No need to add me. More interesting to just “stumble” in once in a while.
You know, it seems computers used to last longer than they do these days, back when they sat on a surface like a toaster.
I think they like being worshipped.
Yeah. I get it. That’s about as often as our pings are, so good hunting! ;o]
Yes, I believe you’re right. Although, my first one was a Gateway, and it seemed to crash with alarming frequency. Then I got an HP with Win-7 and thought I was in heaven. But then I got so I couldn’t lift it, and had to go to a laptop.
I don’t even recall how many of those I’ve had but the best one was a refurbished Lenovo. These days, I keep thinking about a Mac, but then I don’t know how I’d convert all those files...
So I’d just like to have a computer I could worship again...if there is such a thing.
“You shall be addled”
“Don’t you mean added?”
“Both!”
Just kidding.
No, I don’t ping it out too often.
But if you prefer stumbling in, who am I to take that from you?
😄
I agree. As long as you can get to the store and walk around, you should.
How’s the weather up there, Bob?
w00t!
I got phone calls the last 2 days that trash day was postponed on account of snow.
That’s better than vuja-de.
