Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Vet says nothing is wrong with Dwyn, she just has this weird triple coat thing going on where she has extra long guard hairs, the regular fluff underneath that is similar length but not guard hair, and downy fluff under it all that makes her look like moths have taken residence at the slightest motion she makes.

Look! Anudder floof! Right where I wanted hims.

Good morning.

The pills have been sorted, and that’s as far as I’ve gotten. There are probably other things to be done, but the big thing, of course, is to go to Wally World in time to pick up my food order. Fun! I was sitting here a while ago, reconciling the checkbook and thought that I missed walking through the store.

So when the BB SUV well and truly dies, I can either hitch a ride with Sharon or get delivery and begin to walk the neighborhood.

How the hell did a thread from October 2020 get to almost 3000 posts?

Wait, this is an undead thread?

I’m undead?

Tectonic plates in my head made me undead??

I’m going back to bed.

I like walking through the store, too, although it’s more fun when you can see people’s faces and smile at them. What a world, what a world ...

Good morning. It’s still dark here.

We finally got the snow - it started after 6 last night. I don’t think it has shut anything down this far north.

Good morning and happy Twosday, all.

We have company, so make sure you put on your robes this morning. I think Darks put the coffee on. Drink it at your own risk.

Yes, it IS the Undead Thread! You know how we operate...hijack a thread and make it last for months... ;o]

Glad you could join us! I could add you to the ping list, if you wish, but it’s extremely low volume, these days. The Flying Castle has seemed to have lost its allure, and most people don’t want to bother, so here here are, trying to keep it alive...

That’s a surprisingly common phenomenon, although denial is probably a factor.

Happy Tuesday morning. I need to go wash my face off and then put the sleep shirts away. Maybe I’ll have it all done by the time I have to leave.
