A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Exactly!!
LOL!
Ah, yes...the sins of the great unwashed masses, exposed for all to see!
(A little education goes a long way!)
Shannon may very well have gained weight. But if her coat is also improved they can both be good things!
Crikey. The bed has finally been made and that plumb wore me out! Of course, I was tired, anyway, so it wouldn’t have taken much.
I have a list of things to get cracking on tomorrow, and I’m thinking I may have to have the groceries delivered. I’ll check the time slots and see what there is, because if there’s nothing for 0700 to 0800, I may as well just go shop. — Done. All I have to do is drive up there in the morning!
There is still a while before bedtime, but I’m getting the Wobblies again, so no telling how much longer I can hang out with all y’all.
I put in some time on the treadmill. I’m trying to get into shape for hiking season, which will be here before we know it.
I wish it was bedtime here, too.
So, just to clarify - you set a clock on it or something?
The mattress pad is warming up the bed, and the lamp is on in there, so within the next hour, I should be able to take my silly self in and get parallel to the deck.
I was going to take some chocolate chip cookies over to Chuck and just as I was ready to head out the door, I saw him drive out of the complex. He has a doctor’s appointment, so the cookies went into the freezer and will come back out on Wednesday. I didn’t feel like going outside in the first place, so I was just as happy. ;o]
I’ve forgotten what it was like to go hiking. Although, when the weather turns nice, I might start to walk a little and get some use out of the walking stick... Then I can encourage my Favorite Daughter-In-Law to walk with me when I get to AR.
Ha-ha-ha! I like it!
I am stuck at home unable to go in to work.
There’s already ten to eighteen inches of snow outside.
Cleared half the driveway, it’s already covered in four inches of snow.
Local roads are CLOSED to travel, even if my car could make it down the road.
Ah, a humor!
I put on my hiking boots and went left-right-left many times.
Oh, bummer. Some of my friends in other parts of NC have snow, but not me.
I had to call my supervisor.
He’s stuck in the office.
Even if I get the driveway clear, it immediately drifts back shut, and the road (Teh Orad!) is impassable.
Radar says “Heh, you’re all levels of effed up.”
Even better, bought a snowblower on Saturday.
Fired it up today and immediately broke it.
Jury rigged the part the broke, finished the driveway.
Only to watch everything I did be undone in minutes.
The joys of Upnorth Living! Do you at least have heat?
I’ve seen that before, but it’s still funny, especially Mrs. Lewis laying an egg!
and now you have an idea how trump must feel...
Doctors put a tectonic plate in my head. Dang thing keeps sliding around!
Yeah.
Xinnie the Pooh and Pedobear too, our current “Administration”.
