A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

So you did!
It sounds like a plan, re the car.
Well, the files have all been sorted and the last step to that is to divide the last bunch of stuff into the different file folders. Another day.
Right now, I have a stack of papers that need to be shredded but it will take two tries at that because of the amount of papers there are. And that means the shredder will have to be emptied three times because it’s about half-full, now. Unngh...
I swear, the preparation for packing is almost worse than the packing. And I’m wearing my cute little self out just trying to get ready for the move.
w00t!
The prep, packing, and moving the packed boxes into place so you can get around before the truck is loaded are all part of the packing.
Chili and cornbread sound good, but I’m out of both at the moment. I had a small cardboard pizza. Somehow, Red Baron singles aren’t as tasty as they were when I was working.
So how are you feeling? Are you finally feeling as well as you did before the C-19 hit? And the rest of the family? Have they improved?
Now, I’m beginning to feel as tired as if I just spent another sleepless night. Tomorrow morning, before I take the truck to Casey, I need to get that other application ready to be sent off. While I’m trying to move, life just keeps happening, and interfering with what I’m trying to do. Go figger.
Thanks. No one was going to pick it up and I had some other things to talk about (even if I do talk to myself a lot — I mean, I do it on this side of the computer screen, so I don’t feel too ashamed these days to do it on the other side) and I couldn’t wait for one of yas to pick it up...
Thanks, a second time. But you’re right, of course, and I just need to try and get my chips together so it can make it all happen when it needs to.
Focusing is very hard, these days, for whatever reason. I just wish I knew what supplement was good for helping with that.
Based on my own capabilities in the focus department it would be one of the ones I’m not taking.
Garlic?
I’m feeling fine, except for usual winter things. In a way, going through Covid has been nice. “Sorry, we can’t go anywhere with other people!”
I found a couple of supplements that, if they work, I’ll let you know about. It will take a month or longer to be sure, but, if there’s a hint that they work, I’ll know it.
I’m glad you’re recovering. As the the late Igor used to say, “A change is as good as a rest.” Maybe it’s that way with you, as well. ;o]
How much change?
A quarter used to do it in those “magic fingers” things in the motel rooms. Also those chairs in the airport that had TVs in front of them used to take coins.
But I don’t know about now. Inflation and all that.
Yep... It’s definitely a three-floof morning.
Good morning.
I don’t look forward to this morning, but the BB SUV has to be checked out, and whatever has to be done to nurse it along for the next few months is what will have to happen.
Next on the agenda is filling out another application and getting it mailed by tomorrow.
Then, I’ll finish with the file boxes.
You sound busy already! Now I feel like I should go do something useful.
Good morning. It doesn’t seem to be raining right now, which is nice. We need to go to the library later.
These are the hours of the day when, if I’m feeling well enough, things get accomplished and I am busy! Some days are better than others and I need to strike while the iron is hot, so-to-speak.
I don’t really know what it’s doing outside, except that the wind died down in the last hour. I need to replace the plastic over the swamp cooler vent today, as the tape has worked loose and won’t stay stuck. It makes the entire place very cold.
I really want to go back to bed but things need to be done, so here I am.
Now, however, I have to gather my documents for copying, and then get the application filled out and ready to be mailed.
I think I’ve figured out why my nose has been so runny lately — the cardboard boxes that are broken down and stacked under the futon. If I don’t wear long sleeves when I pack, my upper arms will break out in a rash. Yep — allergic to cardboard.
Oh, dear! If it’s not one thing, it’s another! Maybe there’s a coating on the cardboard or something.
I’m going to do a Zoom Weight Watchers meeting today, in aid of getting the old bod pulled together before camp season. I have plans that involve rewarding myself with the Diagon Alley Lego set, but I’m going to Achieve Something before I put in the order, which will then take months to arrive, like the castle did.
I don’t know about a coating on the cardboard. I’ve been that way since I was a Brand New Bride and we moved from San Diego to Waukegan IL for Shore Duty.
The Diagon Alley Lego set sounds like an apt reward for Achieving Something, and I say, GO ferit!
More sorting has been done, the application is in the envelope and I need to print up some stamps.
Then, I’ll do more sorting and filing, if I feel up to it. Crikey. It never ends. But I’m making headway. I think. Maybe. If I could just get this pile of stuff for donations out the door, I’d have enough room to get into the closet and get that sorted out, as well.
Happy Friday Eve, all.
Hard to believe we’re already here. The weeks are flying by, although the days seem long. I never understand how that works. I guess there’s something about the theory of relativity in there somewhere.
I wonder if you came out of retirement and got a job if you could get some rest. Retirement sounds like a lot of work.
