A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

“They” tell me I’m elderly, but as far as I’m concerned, age is a state of mind.
I refuse to be placed into a category that defines me as something less than active, even though there are times I’m not as active as I want to be.
Happy Tuesday!
The new way home took me farther west than I wanted to be, but there is another road about a hundred yards to the east that is probably the one I want. It’s hard to judge which one to choose because the map on the phone is not a relief map.
Anyway, I made it home without too many people cursing at me.
Glad you made it there and back. I was going to have Pat drive me to the library, but the Check Engine light was on in the Avalon. Now that I’m back from the library, having driven there in the van, Pat can drive the car over to the mechanic.
I have to leave for the library and Walgreen’s soon, but I was afraid I wasn’t going to have enough left for the prescription. This is the one for the nerves in my neck so i need to make sure there are no delays in getting it.
The first auto shop we went to was closed until at least the end of the month. We went to a different branch.
The wind is very cold, and the temp isn’t but 2° warmer than it was when I left for Walmart at 0540. GAH!
There were no DVDs waiting for me. I suspect be the end of the day, there will be, but I can wait.
(My knee is killing me.)
I’m thinking about nap. The thermostat says it’s 70 in here, but my hands are very cold.
I’m going downhill fast, but as usual, I’m trying to hang in there!! Crikey.
*yawn*
Enjoy your nap!
And, in my case, the state of my mind is feeling old, old, old.
But I'm active. You won't believe how much time I spend jumping to conclusions, dodging blame, and pushing my luck.
We wanted to purchase dinner for the in-laws on Sunday. The restaurant we wanted to order from had a regular customer (inside customer) test positive for COVID so, out of an abundance of caution, they were closed until all their staff could be tested.
We wound up getting KFC and my tummy was NOT happy.
My taste buds were, but my tummy is really peeved with them.
Taste? What is this “taste” you speak of?
Actually, I’m enjoying not caring what I eat.
Kitteh echoes yer sediments! “What is this ‘taste’ you speak of?”
Good morning.
How are you feeling this morning? Are your taste buds more active today?
The shower has been had so I’m having my tea now, and afterwards the day can start. For what it’s worth.
I’ll be having some visitors at one point between now and Sunday. I won’t know exactly what day or time, but it will only be for a short while. No overnight, which is a good thing because I don’t have sheets for the futon.
Good morning. I’m feeling okay this morning, aside from some sneezing and nose-blowing. And it seems as though I can smell and taste things more each day. I put some lotion on an itch yesterday, and I could smell the coconut in the lotion.
It just occurred to me that I haven’t seen James yet today. I should make sure he isn’t dead or otherwise in need of emergency medical care.
I was going to take a shower, having missed my turn yesterday, but it appears a boy is in the shower. I guess I’ll do Plan B: clean the stove.
The bed has been made, but trying to clean for company isn’t in the cards. How do I hide the mess of packing?
I think I’ll walk over and check the mail. It appears the wind has finally died down, after almost 48 hours of blowing. I suspect the walk will wear me out.
Good morning. Happy Wednesday.
Worked until 12:30 last night while developers tried to fix a really elusive bug. Got back up at 3:30 hoping I would be sending an email that it was all resolved. But it wasn’t done until 5 so I didn’t go back to bed.
I may be a little less coherent than normal today.
I guess the old insult, "All your taste is in your mouth!" really wouldn't apply to you.
Being coherent is overrated. I suggest saying, “Uh huh,” a lot.

Great minds, eh?
I walked over to get the mail and hit the jackpot. Three applications, only one of which I'll fill out, thanks to the input (finally) of my Favorite Son, but this application is HUGH!!!
I would say, just off-hand, from the looks of the documents included, that AR has had a problem in the past with abusive partners/parents/spouses/children. Just. Wow.
A good note, though is that there may be some relief for my herbal supplement expenses. If so, yay, AR!!
It sounds as though you have a large project ahead of you.
I plan to clean the stove, if the other family members will *ever* vacate the kitchen for more than ten minutes.
