Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I’ve been on a Murdoch Mysteries binge. The series seems to have taken on a a darker tint in Seasons 12 and 13. I’m not sure I like all the intrigue and cliff-hangers, not to mention the impending, hinted-at break-up between William and Julia...

The only place that makes fresh donuts here is Lin’s and they make terrible chocolate frosting. It’s far too bitter for my taste.

Vlad said Dunkin’ Donuts was open at the drive-through only, so they just walked home. At least they got some exercise!

Good morning.

I slept well. Better than I expected. One thing is sure and that’s that I will send that email to my son. I’m done here. NOT going through this a fourth time.

Now, I’m going to take my pills and get some breakfast and then take my shower. My joints don’t want me to type anything today, so the wet heat will do them good.

What a handsome floof!!

The shower has been had and I’ll go make the bed in a minute.

Yesterday was the last dose of tea for two more weeks, so that’s out of the way.

As I head for St George this morning, I’ll stop at the library and drop off the DVDs that are due as well as put my ballot in the drop box, and head for Kate’s house. She’s going to drive me in because she wants to go to the thrift store (YAY!) and though I’m a nervous passenger, my right knee is killing me, and I’m not sure it will be up to the accelerator and brake for as long as it takes to get there and back home.

It will be a wasted day, but it has to be done.

I’m a nervous passenger, too.

I hope it all works out as planned. We have an outing planned this morning, visiting a historic cemetery, and then more soil.

I envy you going to the cemetery! My late sister took on a project in Wadena, MN years ago, to index all the names in an old cemetery. I have no idea how many people were buried there but it seemed to be a labor of love for her.

Jerry said he thought he could find someone(s) to take the birds for me so I don’t have to worry about killing them on the move. That came as a surprise and a relief. Now if it just happens!

Sharon said she would come to visit tomorrow morning, so that will be a change!

A couple of friends from Cub Scouts are joining us, unless the weather turns bad in the next couple of hours.

The congregation of the church where we’re going was founded in 1770, but their current site is the 3rd, so there are two older cemeteries that aren’t easily accessible.

The LDS Church has begun to index black cemeteries, now. They are responsible for the Ellis Island records being available as well as Freedman’s Bank records. Amazing, extensive genealogical record transcribing!

If I ever get all the projects done that keep piling up around me, I’d like to do indexing from home. Census records still need to be done in all languages.

In these parts, there are a number of congregations founded during or immediately after the Civil War. Their stories are very interesting.

“Founded in 1770”
That must be one of the oldest in state (?)

Good Morning,
Currently sat in the Toyoda Garage whilst they fiddle with the cars bits that require fiddling with.
No Tea or Coffee...government guidelines. Boiling water has an amazing affect on bugs, but no. Rules!
The Sun has just vanished from sight with a deep low dark rain cloud.

The earliest Presbyterian congregations in the state date from the 1730s and 40s, but the earliest in the Charlotte area are from the 1760s, so Philadelphia is close to the oldest around here.

Good luck with the Toyota! If it makes you feel better, our government is super dumb, too.

It rained over the weekend, so I’m hoping we’ll see some good mushrooms at the cemetery.

Tried that...sense of humour failure occurred. RULES!

“good mushrooms at the cemetery.”

LOL!

Dumb government appears to be a modern prerequisite character trait of those who insist on placing themselves in positions of power.
The solution....A good jet washing with New improved Trump swamp cleaning fluid.
