A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Yes, why don’t you go to Walmart when it’s light!
If we all have Covid, in a couple of weeks we’ll all be immune, long before even Pat (”frontline essential worker”) could get a vaccine.
With the few people I personally know who have had the disease, I’m not ready to wish for that approach yet. I’m glad your case is mild, and I’ve known one other mild case, but most of the people I’ve known have been hit pretty hard.
It’s not like we went out looking for it, but since it has turned up, I’m looking on the bright side. DP appears to be going to avoid getting tested just so he can tell himself he didn’t do what I suggested, but whatever.
Ah, by “we all” you meant your family, not your FRiends.
There are times I’ve wanted to know if I had a mild case just so I could relax. And although I’m fairly chill about catching things, Mrs. ArGee is not at all.
It turns out DP can’t take the boys for their tests tomorrow morning, so it’s a good thing I’m too strong-minded to actually ever be sick. (Famous last words.)
I put on my, “I can’t believe I’m having to do this,” voice, which sounds exactly like my mother, and asked him, “As a personal favor to me, stipulating that you should never do anything you don’t want to do, but ...” to please get himself tested should it ever be convenient for him, so we’ll know whether he’s immune afterward.
GAH.
W00t!!
Yes, I did mean the family, not anyone else.
My mom is getting a vaccine on Friday. She had to arrange it herself through friends, because the corporation that owns her building has gotten themselves into a snafu and doesn’t know when they’ll get around to vaccinating hundreds of old people ...
She’s going to drive over to Tampa.
OK. I disobeyed a direct order and went to Walmart in the dark but I’ll have to go again tomorrow, when I have gas in the truck, which I will put in while I’m running errands again today. Seems my errand-running coincides with the DVDs that need to be returned to the library.
I suspect if DP gets the Covid, he will be DP to the nth degree. I don’t envy you, in that event.
The drive home wasn’t as bad as anticipated, but not as good as it could have been. Since Walmart opens at 0700 tomorrow, I’ll have plenty of light to see my way home. The hills are getting harder and harder for the BB SUV to make, but at least I don’t have to drive them at 65 mph.
Oh, dear.
The chances are good that I’ve had it and just didn’t know because the symptoms for most flus are the same, and CFIDS will act like the flu during a relapse. So. I don’t think I’ll stress about it either way.

Okay, it's all good. Glad you made it home from Walmart after going in the dark when I said you shouldn't.
Heh, that’s cute.
It was fairly mild, we wouldn't even know for sure if my nonagenarian mom would have had more liquids. She got tested at the ER after they rehydrated her.
Mostly we slept a LOT had low grade or no fevers (mom never had a fever, I topped out at 100.4°, I think Ratboy managed to beat me by a few tenths.
STAY HYDRATED! Palliative care for the symptoms. NyQuil, DayQuil, Musinex, ache and pain relievers (NOT acetaminophen while taking the 'quils).
You all are likely to not have much of an appetite, soup is always good, comfort food is good, not much point in spicy food with the depressed sense of smell and taste. We had spicy foods anyway...
If you aren't taking the Dr. Zelenko cocktail, start.
Quercitin 800 mg (opens the cells to absorb zinc)
Zinc 50 mg (once in the cells jams viral RNA reproduction)
Azithromycin or Doxycycline (protects the lungs, we did without)
Consider adding:
Beta Carotine it forms vitamin A in the body, but unlike straight Vitamin A you body won't covert to more Vitamin A than it can handle, you can't get too much this way.
Vitamin C take increasing doses until diarrhea, then back off a bit
Vitamin D3 5000 IU
We're also taking NAC N-acetyl L-Cysteine 500 mg
But, but, but, I cleared my browser history!
Seven O’clock in the morning and I’m riding the overnight train
I’ve got ten tons of luggage but I left it behind when I came
I look at my watch, says September seventeen
We’re riding past some place where I’ve never been
And I’m waving through the window as we go
Somebody says “Well, hey, what are you waving at?”
Well what have I got to lose
Somebody might wave back
Seven O’clock in the morning and I’m carrying bags under my eyes
Been awake all night, counting the hours to sunrise
Drawing patterns on the tabletop
I lift my gaze and my mouth just dropped
Someone waving in the window at me
And I say “Hey there, what are you waving at?”
When he says “What do I have to lose
Somebody might wave back”
What do I have to lose
Somebody might wave back
Inspired by noticing I hadn’t made coffee yet and it was 7 AM.
These days we’ve been reduced to cheap coffee, so I’ve been adding a wee bit of salt (H/T Darksheare) and a pinch of spice to cut the nasty taste, usually cinnamon, pumpkin spice, nutmeg or allspice. Today cayenne, let’s see if anyone notices...
If I have your correct address, I’ll send you some coffee. Not expensive, not cheap, but very, very good!!
Cute, by the way! LOL!
I use extremely cheap coffee, too. Doesn’t matter now, since I can’t taste anything.
I just got off the phone with the clinic where the boys will go for testing. The lady said Patrick can bring them all - with his shiny new driver’s license! - if an adult signs off on the online “paperwork” in advance.
That was really evocative, nully.
