Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

What a pretty pastel cali!! I heart dat floof!

Good morning.

The shower has been had, and I’ll be writing to Charlie in a few minutes. I don’t want him to think I’ve forgotten him, like I did at his birthday in November. That still hurts.

Hopefully, something might get done today. Maybe. I need to organize my brain before I can organize anything else. That’s a job for Superman.

Good morning. It’s raining here, but at least it isn’t snow. The day’s first project is Pat’s driver’s license. His appointment is at 11:00; I’m not sure where. Then James and Vlad have an Envirothon meeting.

I don’t know what it is, here. Cloudy, with rain tonight. Barely above freezing for now, but it will get colder just at dawn.

All the snow that made Pine Valley Mountain look so pretty last week is gone. The mountain now just looks like a dry winter mountain.

Now I need to take 30 minutes and get that letter written to Charlie.

GAH. The address given at the website of East Charlotte DMV does not exist, according to Mapquest and Google. I really want to put the government in charge of more of my life, don’t you?

So far, the government has managed my life since 1995, when I lost the ability to provide for my own retirement. I’m not happy with the thought that with the Leftists in power, I will become useless and therefore, a way will be found to eliminate me by gradually removing my support system of finances and health care. So no. There is no way I want them in charge of more of my life.

They don't know their own address. I would like to cry, but it would make my nose run even more. I would like to go back to bed with several blankets and The House of the Seven Gables, but I have to start calling the DMV when they open at 8:00 a.m. to try to get their correct address.

Good morning! Happy Friday!

For those keeping score, the last puppy seizure was a month ago. We’re not ready to claim victory yet but we are certainly glad for the current pace.

We have 18 fs now. I think we had 15 when I put the dog out.

Fortunately, she’s gotten quite economical with her activity in the morning.

Back when Obamacare wasn’t yet a thing and I was standing in a super long line at a Brooklyn Post Office I wanted to shout at the top of my lungs, “Do you really want the people running this place in charge of your health insurance???!!!”

But I knew better.

I said something like, “Do you really believe Ted Kennedy can make better decisions for your family than you can?” But they just wanted something “free” so that people wouldn’t experience the consequences of their own irresponsibility.

The DMV’s recorded message included their address. Praise God.

Now I can go get dressed, and then get with my insurance company (which answers the phone!) to get the document showing Pat will have auto insurance.

The government offices seem to like the anonymity of having people guess where they are situated. You could always ask the map in your phone where it is. I mean, if all else fails.

After this summer and then the riots Wednesday I would think Government offices would all move and not tell anyone where they’re going.

Everyone’s getting fed up with government and it’s not going good places.

We’re at 26° right now. I went over to drop off my letter to Charlie and it was a brisk walk. I’ve decided I’m going to ask Chuck to put a nightlight in the laundry room. There’s one in the foyer, but a person has to use the laundry room entrance before 0700, as both doors are locked. The laundry room has a combination lock on it, but the main entrance can only be unlocked from the inside.

Congratulations on getting dressed. Some days, that’s as good as it gets. At least, for me.

I might have added that there are no windows in the laundry room itself, so a nightlight is much more needed there.

The bread is in the maker, and I’m hoping it turns out OK because I’m using a mixture of regular bread flour with oatmeal and almond, the latter two mixed together. We shall see. I need to refill the bread flour canister today, too, once the bread is done and I have a counter to make a mess on.
