Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

Posted on 10/20/2020 9:33:20 PM PDT by BenLurkin

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Imma be REELY clam with kittehs like those!

Good morning.

The laundry is done and so am I! There is no way I can hang the sleep shirts or make the bed for at least another hour. UNNGH.

And imagine my surprise to find two washers done with their cycles, the light on in the laundry room and no one around. So I took the clothes out and put them on the dryers, and went ahead with the wash. No one had shown up by the time the my laundry was done, so I took the clothes off the dryers and put them in the laundry basket that the person had left, then I composed a note and said in effect, I’m sorry to inconvenience you, but this is my time to wash and has been for the last two years. Then I signed it and added my apartment number.

I hope she isn’t too incensed.

So. Another Monday under way. Yay.

I’m sure it will be fine. People often have to move things around at laundromats.

It’s another Monday here, too.

Good morning. Happy Monday. Happy first workday of 2021.

No puppy seizures so far this year so it’s starting off well for us.

That’s good news! There have been no disasters in my environment this year, either.

In NV, it’s not uncommon for thefts in laundromats if the laundry is unattended. So I developed a habit of staying with my laundry until it was done. Imagine my surprise when I moved here to find that some people leave their detergent, fabric softener sheets and liquid in the laundry room from wash day to wash day and no one bothers it.

So I felt it was necessary to explain the misplacement of clothes.

The shirts are hanging to dry.

Good happy Monday morning.

I trust your New Year’s entry was celebrated in a healthy style? ;o]

Good to know there are no puppy seizures so far this year!

I’m going through the freezer so we can use stuff up.

I did that just before I sold it. I don’t know what kind of fridge awaits me in Cabot, but I’m sure it’s nothing like this one. This one has spoiled me with its newness.

I need to go through the pantry. I’m sure there are things that need to be pitched.

I’m trying not to be upset as I find long-expired items purchased by the family’s Impulse Grocery Shopper, of whom keeping him out of Costco would be the most economical thing ever. He did, after all, earn the money, and if he wants to spend it on hoarding perishables until they’re unusable, whatever.

Tom says he bought “Japanese Home Cooking.” I’m relieved to know I didn’t buy it by accident while ordering the Scrabble dictionary!

Unngh. I had one of those Impulse Grocery Shoppers, but it’s a tale too evil to expose in public, because I was the one that ultimately paid for the impulses.

It’s a relief to know Tom bought “Japanese Home Cooking!” I know you like vegetarian, but that would have surprised me if it had been you. I tend to stick to the more traditional, comfort foods, like casseroles with meat and potatoes/pasta/rice. I do like to try food from other cultures, but only as a change, not as a way of life.

If he wants to try a dish for the family, that would be fine. It was only the mystery that had me worried.

I like food any time someone else cooks, so I agree, and I agree with the mystery.

We’ve got a red sky out there, so I think we have some bad weather coming. Not before I get done with my errands, I hope!

The BP is up today for some reason. I wouldn’t normally worry, but I have an appointment at the pain clinic in 45 minutes. I think it won’t be coming down before then.

Breathe slowly in and out, and think about fish silently swimming through a deep, deep lake. But not while you’re driving.

I’m going on an Adventure with Pat soon.

Well, we violated every request in the book by going to my in-laws, but we didn’t stay late. We did not watch the NYC mayor dancing with his wife in Times Square or any other such frolic and frivolity.

When my daughter visited the last two times she demonstrated her culinary talents with the wok, both times things we had never tried. It was fun.

And I am not thrilled to be in the 1970s. We need to get out of this decade.

Again.

I remember 1976: fireworks and air shows.

I dropped of a gift and then mailed a book to Elen, USMC, but decided not to wait in the line at the license-plate office. Maybe tomorrow, with appropriate outerwear and a book.

After lunch, we’ll take a present to another of my choir ladies and go by Your Local Game Store. It doesn’t open until 1:00.

Thanks! That was a nice visual, and almost had me thinking of having a Siamese Fighting fish on my desk. However, that idea will have to wait until The Move is over with, and by then, I may reconsider fish vs. catz.

Meanwhile, I talked them out of taking my blood pressure at the clinic. I stopped at Dollar Tree to get shower caps and just because I want them, they are out. So I’ll have to get one or two at Wally’s tomorrow, depending on how many are in the cheapest package. I’m putting coconut oil on my hair once a week overnight, and the elastic on the shower cap I have is past tense.

Then to Walgreen’s to drop of the prescription, and almost before I got out of the parking lot, I got a text. I didn’t read it until I got home. They need updated insurance information.

Then to Casey’s where I learned he was “on the other side of town,” which could mean anything, and got the same answer to my question that U-Haul gave: disengage the drive shaft. Unngh. I’ll research it.

I can think of more exciting things to do on New Year’s Eve than watch Mayor DeBloviate dance with his wife.

I’m glad you spent times with your in-laws. :o]
