Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I just saw this prayer on another site and thought of you:

This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

Da gray kitteh wif da matching eyes and nose!!

Good morning.

I have the S-L-O-W-s today, but I hope they dissipate by 0700.

I’ve had my church clothes set out for almost a month but haven’t felt well enough to go, so I hope today is different.

Good morning. I’m feeling a little underwhelming, myself. I went to bed at 9:00; then I woke up just before 11:00, heard pouring rain, and texted Pat to say I was picking him up from work. Put on a coat over my pajamas and some shoes ...

He’s getting his driver’s license on Friday.

Frank spent the night at a friend’s house. He should be home 9-ish.

I think my 2021 license plate sticker is in the mail but I’ll get it tomorrow when I go over to wash clothes. I’m so glad I got it taken care of!

Congratulations to Pat! And well done, YOU, for surviving another Teenaged Driver Instruction Course! ;o])

My Favorite Daughter sent me pics of some gingersnaps and said she would send the recipe, and I’m still waiting. She said the recipe was “100 years old!” I found a recipe for soft ginger snaps with orange cream filling, and I may try to make them, just because.

I’ll google that recipe. Maybe Tom would like to make it.

I’m going to have to go to the License Plate Agency. It’s near the Walmart. The DMV’s chat-bot doesn’t accept any of the numbers I’m putting into the form for online registration renewal.

I can do it tomorrow, along with a trip to the post office to send Elen’s graphic novel.

Which recipe? The hunnert year ol’ one? Or the one with orange cream? I’m thinking I don’t want to wait for the email so now that I’ve listened to another uplifting talk, I’ll see what I can find.

I can FReepmail you the gingersnap/orange recipe.

I was very happy that I didn’t have to go to the DMV as it’s about halfway up a long hill on the way to St George.

Give Elen, USMC, my regards, please!

Gingersnap orange cream. Tom is usually here when we get home from church on Sundays, although he’ll have a new work schedule when the school semester starts.

Did you find the recipe?

I’m going to hem that skirt today. I don’t think I’ll make it to church, but I’ll make sure to watch it online. With luck, I can go next week.

I found some recipes. I’ll have to decide whether I feel like making the effort.

I realized, when I was typing up the recipe for myself that one of the reasons I’ve stopped baking is because of the arthritis in my hands. I decided right then and there that I was going to use some of what is left of the little stimulus check, and get a decent mixer. I want to fill my house with the smell of good things again.

The mixer will be here in about a week. Yes, I know — the move and all that. But I need to do this. It’s part of who I’ve always been, and losing interest in it because it was physically painful was a very sad day.

This last month of baking was good for me, but I wasn’t able to do as much as I had planned on because my hands hurt too much. So I’m going to remedy that!

(I’d had to sell my Oster Kitchen Center when I got divorced in order to put food on the table. I’ve missed that thing ever since, and now, I’m going to have something close to it once again.)

I think it’s perfectly fine that you should have a mixer.

I just got a box from Amazon with the Scrabble dictionary, which I asked Tom to order, and “Japanese Home Cooking,” which I did not. I assume Tom ordered it; maybe Elen, USMC, wants it.

Yes, I think it’s perfectly fine as well!!

In fact, I may end up being a baking fool for the little while that I have left before the move!

The mincemeat pie, by the way, is pretty good, and I’ve decided I like it better cold than warm. It was easy, as I just had to buy the refrigerated pie crusts. The hard part was trying to find out how long to cook it because it isn’t on the jar.

I thought you were baking bread.

We’re back from Mass. Jake wants me to go to bed with him. He’s gotten over the snit about getting his flea drops.

Not today. I made the mincemeat pie on Friday, and nothing the last few days. But I will! Maybe, since I’m not going to Walmart, I’ll get some bread made tomorrow, as it’s been on my mind so I’m not surprised you mentioned it!

I want to make those cookies, and have been wanting to make some pineapple cookies as well, but Hands. So the mixer will be like Christmas again! Only better because I didn’t have anything to unwrap on Christmas Day!

So, anyway, I’m going to take my pills and head down the hall because I’m very tired. I’d say “I need my beauty sleep,” but there will never be enough to make a difference!
