A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I hope you have a good night. I drew some leaves with moderate success. Then I cut up vegetables, and next, I’m going to run the teenbros over to church for youth group.
100.4°, chills, coughing.
Don’t be sick, Nully! Just be allergic to something! Prayers for you.
I’d rather be sick and get over it than have an allergy that never goes away.
Annoying either way..
Yes, and both are such a time-wasters!
At any rate, I hope its over with quickly and isn’t too severe.
Oh, dear. I hope you feel better soon! James had a bit of a fever a couple of days ago, but he got over it quickly.
There is a pet carrier at the clubhouse that would be absolutely perfect for a new kitteh. It’s expensive by the looks of it, and I’m very tempted go get it, just in case I can have dis cyute morning floofy kitteh for my own!
Good morning.
The cards are ready to be mailed, which I’ll do on my way to Walmart this morning.
I still have to hang the laundry but wanted to drink my tea first. The schedule is so important for keeping the symptoms at a minimum. *whine-whine-whine*
The only other thing today besides laundry and Walmart is going to visit Sharon and Jerry. Not what I wanted but it’s the first time I’ve been asked since I moved in two years ago.
It’s nice to go on a visit sometimes.
Nobody is up here but the cats and me. I guess I could have breakfast.
I’m not usually very comfortable in strange surroundings, and it seems to be getting worse as I age. As a young navy wife, I never felt that way. I was always the first to go introduce myself to the new move-ins and that stayed with me well into civilian life. But CFIDS.
So, now I need to take 15 or 20 minutes to go hang the clothes. Stay tuned! And enjoy a quiet breakfast.
I’m giving a presentation at church at noon. It will be on the streaming vid. I’ll send you the link to our parish YouTube channel.
That will be great! Thanks!!
Good morning. Happy Monday!
Fever’s down a full degree, so far so good...
That’s good.
Good morning. It is quite Mondayish here, too. There are no sunbeams for Jake. The rain is supposed to be over by midday; maybe I’ll have the teenbros work on putting up outdoor lights.
Happy Monday, ArGee!
And a good morning to you as well. :o]
Excellent! I’m very glad to hear it. :o]
How is your weather, your family, and your dog this Monday. My brother in the Scranton area got snow.
I just remembered that Friday the 13 fell on Sunday this month. I’n glad it’s over with!
