Baseball Hall of Famer Joe Morgan, a two-time World Series champion and two-time National League MVP All Star, died Sunday. He was 77. CBS Sports' Jim Bowden confirmed the news

Morgan played 22 MLB seasons, beginning his career with the Houston Astros (then the Colt .45s) in 1963. Morgan then made his way to the Cincinnati Reds, where he became a key member of the Big Red Machine, winning back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976. Morgan also won back-to-back NL MVP Awards both of those years.

Morgan was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 1990.

I loved Joe’s elbow twitch as he was waiting for the ball to come from the pitcher.

RIP

Those Lumber Company/Big Red Machine battles of the 70’s were epic. He was a class act.

Growing up in the Pittsburgh area, Cincinnati was probably the Pirate's biggest rival in the 70s. Nonetheless they had some great players, and I had a lot of respect for Joe Morgan.

RIP

Saw an excellent baseball game last night between Tampa Bay and Houston. Yet none of these current players hit the emotional cord that each of those players did when they played.

Same here. He’s one of the few Cincinnati Reds I liked.

Joe was one of the most exciting MLB players in the 1970s. As a Reds fan, I can’t begin to say how much joy I had watching him play. He was a vital cog in the vaunted Big Red Machine. The 1975-76 Reds were some of the greatest teams in baseball history.

As a part time employee of the Reds in Baseball Operations in those days, I idolized Joe as one of the really good guys on the Reds and in Major League baseball. He will really be missed.

All players whom I admired as a boy. I still have their Strat-O-Matic cards. I pulled out my old set to play with my nephew when he dropped by for a visit this summer.

He was fascinated with how kids played before there were computers.

I was a SOM player myself in the late 60s, early 70s. We used to toss all the various card sets (seasons, past seasons, HOF, etc) into one big pile and draft multiple teams each. All-time greats along with our present-day (at the time) favorites. It was a fun (albeit not very accurate) way to learn about past baseball greats.

God bless him, Joe was treated for years for something along the lines of leukemia or lymphoma or similar hematological disease. I know this from personally seeing him at that clinic.
