I want to buy a home defense shotgun and I would appreciate FR input. Ive always been more of a rifle and pistol person. What say yall to a senior citizen buying a shotgun for the first time. Is Mossberg Shockmaster or Roadblocker a good choice.
Also, if you think it might be used at night (and why not its for home defense), look for a good aftermarket integral light system, something that is built in to the forearm or at least has a separate pressure switch you can mount. There are lots of cheap lights you can rail mount with the pressure switch on the light tail cap. If you fire a shot with your thumb on the light, all the recoil coming back through your thumb is gonna hurt. Dont recommend those.

Buy a 20 gauge instead of the 12
Mossberg 500 or Remington 870. Good luck finding either these days.
Winchester Model 1300 pump; has an 8 round tubular magazine, 18 1/2 barrel. I can shoot it with no problem with recoil.

true, thats an option so long as you have practiced with them and know the gun will still cycle properly.
Prior to my boating accident, many years ago, I have a Benelli Supernova and thought it was excellent.
I have been trying to find one since early this year. No one stocks them. I’d like to at least hold it before I buy it.
How much do you want to spend? A basic Mossberg 500 is hard to beat. Bought mine in 79 and I still use it regularly for 3 gun competitions. Dont waste your money on a tactical shotgun. Its all bling. Theres nothing they can do that a basic Mossberg 500 cant do.
Mine are all pump Mossbergs, so that hasn’t been an issue.
agreed 100%
Agree, I have something very similar (maybe different brand) on my 870. Without it I would never shoot slugs with it. I did three times before I got the aftermarket stock to sight in the slugs with a dot sight. I was in fear of the pain on the last two shots.
I was looking at the web site, if you had one of the better more expensive ones on the web site some evil person might just kill you to get the gun, that is if they can kill you before you kill them.
Mossberg 590A1.
Good enough for the Navy to use to breach doors, good enough for me.
Although, you sure a 12 ga is a good idea for a senior?
Remington 870 Police Edition. Comes off a separate line. A little more $$. Used by many PDs for decades. Dependable.
Had my hands on
A Russian VEPR about
For sale too.
Mossberg!
The kind that just goes click click are defective.
Joking aside you need to give a few more details, price limit, how much power you can handle, what is the maximum number of times you figure you will be firing it and are you concerned about making big holes in the walls.
Generally a 20 gage four shot is the considered enough for basis home defense and it is around $500.
As for brand they are all pretty much alike at that price point.
