Sources: Big Ten reverses course, will play college football this fall

If there’s been a defining theme for this anguished Big Ten summer, it’s been waiting. Waiting for news on the fate of the season. Waiting for answers from a frozen conference office. And, finally, waiting for news on a reversal.

On Wednesday morning, the waiting finally ended. After sources confirmed to Yahoo Sports that the Big Ten will return to play in the fall of 2020, the conference made it official. The league is expected to start the season on Oct. 24, which is scheduled to allow for both a conference title game and a potential spot in the College Football Playoff.

“Our focus with the Task Force over the last six weeks was to ensure the health and safety of our student-athletes. Our goal has always been to return to competition so all student-athletes can realize their dream of competing in the sports they love,” Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren said in a conference statement. “We are incredibly grateful for the collaborative work that our Return to Competition Task Force have accomplished to ensure the health, safety and wellness of student-athletes, coaches and administrators.”

The decision has been expected since the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors (COPC) met on Sunday night, as optimism had permeated through the league. But as the days went on and information evaporated, the coaches and administrators around the league were frozen in anticipation.

In typical Big Ten fashion this most muddled of summers, it was simultaneously stunning and not surprising at all when the news leaked out over a hot mic by a Nebraska president Ted Carter.

Looks like some of the minor leagues are following the major league SEC! ;)

100%.

All I see is a bunch of Antifas destroying another part of my American cultural heritage.

Sports is exactly the same as Hollywood.

There won’t be any college basketball in California, Oregon and Washington this year either.

When Trump wins, there may not be any college sports out here for several years. It could happen.

There are some good folks out west, but they are (figuratively) outgunned. I pull for Oregon State, but hate University of Oregon.

If the civil war in Oregon ever goes on, the liberals better get read good at ducking real fast, because the rednecks are the one with the teeth.

Fighting Ducks aren’t really a thing except in fantasy land.

I also will pull for Washington State, and in very limited circumstances, for Washington. Of course, if I were from Washington, I’d probably think of the Huskies the way I think of the Ducks.

Football is a proxy for politics.

With that, for all of Saban’s faults, Roll Tide and Sic Semper Tyranis. (I may have the case wrong—I wrote it initially as a nominative singular but I think it should be a dative plural)

It’s PAC-12, not PAC-10. They added Utah and Colorado several years ago. Not that I care anymore.

"Tells me the Covid issue is in major decline."

I agree with you but the Big10 presidents apparently do not because of the draconian testing protocols they have adopted. On top of daily antigen testing, they are also requiring baseline cardiac enzyme labs, ekgs, echocardiograms, and cardiac mris for all players, coaches, and staff. Couple this with play and practice decisions based on complicated infection ratios, those in charge of the Big10 have given themselves a path not to play.

Now what about all the players their Teams to go elsewhere? I wonder what the coaches are going to say? But better yet, I wonder what the media will say when the players complain that they are no longer welcome on the Team?

They would never have reversed without pressure from Trump
