In San Antonio, the Uninsured Are Turning to Traditional Healers to Help Them Survive the Pandemic
Texas Monthly ^ | September 15 | Peter Holley

The Botanica Los Misterios sits at the end of a strip mall in a working-class neighborhood of San Antonio’s South Side, next to a shoe repair shop and a store selling mariachi accessories. If not for a dazzling mural of Selena flowing down the side of the building, the Botanica’s light blue storefront could be easily missed from South Flores Street, a busy roadway that cuts through the southern half of the city.

On a recent afternoon, the owner, a soft-spoken, balding man in his mid-40s, was getting ready to lock up the tiny store when Marisa Casanova walked in the front door, a look of worry on her face. The 47-year-old patron, who grew up nearby and works as a caretaker, held a crumpled $10 bill in her hand—enough, she hoped, to pay for a miracle.

I hate to disappoint that left-leaning rag-but the reason those people aren’t going to docs is not because they don’t have insurance-it is because traditional natural medicine is more trusted than drugs among Hispanics-especially those from or living in rural areas...

I ought to know, since my ancestry is Hispanic and I grew up in a remote rural area near the border in W Texas, where curanderas are common-one of my aunts was one-she sold all sorts of vitamins purchased wholesale as part of her treatments, as well as herbs that she grew herself-and always advised lots of prayer-because God is the healer.

I’m a naturalist to this day and I trust the herbal knowledge I was taught-and I trust a natural healer far more than a doc-there are a couple of them here in BFE where I live-locals of all ethnicities go to them-they take barter, as well as cash-many of us go to them rather than to a doc-same as we go to a chiropractor or acupuncturist before a doc-likely because a lot of us are naturalists who don’t eat processed food or take any drugs-we are healthy as a rule, and you don’t see many obese people among naturalists. Not the life that will suit everyone, but it has always worked just fine for me...

There has been very little effect on people out here from Wuhan virus-many of us has mild cases, but that was in March/April-so anyone can laugh, scoff, etc at natural living and natural cures and curanderas, but it works-and it is safer than drugs-the vitamin and zinc regimen that has been posted here many times as a preventive is the best way to go I think-keep up your immune system and you will have the jump on the virus...

Just read an article the old people in Holland try not to go to the hospital there because of the ability of doctor to euthanize them. makes sense when you think about it. Alt med prob popular with old people there.

I’m way more than a 2nd generation American-over 200 years worth-I trust traditional healers and I’m certainly not in a cult-just a natural living nut-there are a lot of us around...

Thank you, Jesus; for your free gift that enables me to access the spirit of faith instead of the spirit of fear.

No mention of obesity or diabetes within the community.

Obesity and type II diabetes are common in the Hispanic population in cities, same as with other ethnic groups...

I like the Bum Steer awards 30 years ago but they’ve been decidedly less funny lately.

There are.

All ages, but mostly older and all ethnic backgrounds.

One problem right now is the COVID testing/contact tracing. If there is a non-medical treatment, why not try it before going through the nightmare enforced by the COVID fear?

DH and I were discussing this earlier tonight. Alt treatments were one of the more valuable approaches we learned while prepping. We have insurance and Senior Care for reduced scripts and we have no problem with antibiotics (and a source)or the quercetin/zinc protocol, but the herbal/supplement/vitamin approach simply works relatively quickly for so many conditions that it’s 2nd nature to try that first.

We’re also generally healthy, not obese and we are active and eat well.

Jimmy Swaggart and Mike Murdock come to mind.
