Joe Biden has missed two deadlines to name a running mate to take on Donald Trump. Why is he taking so long?

Joe Biden has given two dates to pick his running mate.

First, he said he hoped to make the choice by August 1.

When that deadline slipped, he promised he'd reveal his pick in the first week of August.

We're still waiting.

So what's going on with Biden and his VP pick? Here's what we know.

When will Biden make his pick?

We just don't know for sure.

We've only got the two confirmed dates out of Biden, and both of those have passed.

The Democratic Convention - the big song and dance where Biden officially becomes the nominee - will be held from August 17-20.

It'd be unprecedented if Biden didn't finalise the choice before then, which means most pundits are expecting him to make the decision sometime in the next week.

Why has he taken so long?

The entire 2020 race has been upended because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Timelines that were considered "normal" have been tossed out the window.

One reason could simply be publicity. Hiding out in his Mother’s basement is not getting his name out much. The only story the press is covering is who his running mate will be.

So by not announcing he stays in the news.

Another reason would be that he has picked a running mate but five minutes later he forgot who it was.

I think a few more of his picks have said No And that makes Joe go back to start. First everyone said Kamalla and she got a face lift, then Susan Rice rumors, now Whitmer took the trip to DL

I speculated last week that he hasn’t announced his VP pick because they narrowed it down to a short list or contenders and they all came up with awful results in internal polls, focus groups, etc.

Personally I think it’s another ploy to take the spotlight off of Biden’s mental issues. I think they plan to run the VP contest right up to the last day or two of the democrat “virtual” convention, then if Biden really screws up his acceptance speech, everybody will be talking about the VP pick and not the speech.

“Mr. Biden, have you chosen your VP?”

“Yes, my choice is Rice Pudding, er, I mean Susan Rice.”

Pitter patter, the DNC convention starts next Sunday.
Prolly gonna make the big reveal nite of his acceptance speech, so VSG President Trump cannot assign and cement a nick name

Typical Democrat, that’s why.

They promise the world, but when it comes time to deliver, it’s, well, er, um, “It’s somebody else’s fault”, or whatever dodge

Liars who prey on the purposefully-uneducated or provokedly-rabble-roused.

Because he isn’t choosing it. The people managing him are choosing and it sounds like there’s an internal argument over who to pick.

Most VP picks end up being a curveball that nobody was really talking about before their selection. However I don't think that's the case with Biden. He's not smart enough to throw a curveball. I think it really is between Harris and Rice (I don't put much stock in the Gretchen Whitmer rumors simply because she met with Biden, she's a Democrat Governor from an important swing state, there are likely dozens of reasons Biden would have met with her, not related to the VP contest).

Personally I think it will Rice because it's the old Obama crew that is running the Biden campaign (and making all "his" decisions for him) and Rice was the ultimate Obama insider. But I guess will see whenever somebody decided to tell Biden who his VP will be...

Would you want a running mate you don’t know?

Sounds as good as any reason given so far.

Someone else mentioned that the VP choices have declined the offer. Not good for the Democrats.

Of course Biden’s big mistake (or just one of many) was in limiting his choices to a female of color. It would be like saying you are planning a wedding but are only going to shop at Dollar General.

They are still planning to dump Joe and don’t want to lock in a bad VP until the real candidate is named.

He says he won’t choose until he gets his pudding - then, as they wipe his chin, he forgets he had pudding and demands pudding before he chooses...

America is gripped with hysteria. Every night, families sit round the radio, waiting on the latest update. There hasn’t been this much pandemonium since the casting of Scarlet O’Hara in Gone with the Wind.
