Kayleigh McEnany: It's been one year since my preventative double mastectomy
Fox News ^ | 2019 | Kayleigh McEnany

On the morning of May 1, 2018, I woke up knowing that the day I had anticipated for nine years had finally arrived. It was the day of my preventative double mastectomy – the day I would attack my BRCA 2 genetic mutation head-on and take my chances of breast cancer from 84 percent to virtually zero.

...My faith in Jesus Christ was my strength that day, and those socks were a reminder of how He can turn life’s trials into good.

Several years prior to my mastectomy, I had gotten implants at the recommendation of my doctor... Ordinarily, implants cannot be placed immediately following a mastectomy because of the strain they put on already sensitive skin...

One year down the road, I could not be happier with my decision to have a preventative double mastectomy. In January, I had my final reconstructive surgery. My saline implants were exchanged for silicone ones with appropriate contouring that left me looking almost identical to my pre-mastectomy self.

My post-mastectomy life is not one embattled but emboldened. I live free of fear and full of hope.

In my post-mastectomy life, I could stand before more than a thousand women at Turning Point USA’s Young Women conference in June and say with complete confidence: “I will never die of breast cancer.”

(Article is from 2019, so it's been 2 years now.) I had a friend who went through this after college, and actress Angelina Jolie is probably the most high profile woman to reveal her journey. It seems to be a process a large number of women with the gene are increasingly choosing to undergo.

We should be thankful that someone of such character has chosen to take on such a thankless job as she now holds.

May she and her husband and her daughter and her entire extended family be blessed.

Kayleigh McEnany is an absolutely amazing person.

I just started typing that I love her unassailable confidence, when I said to myself, surely this depth of confidence can only come from faith. So I typed ‘Kayleigh McEnany faith’ into google and found this article:

https://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/news/2020/05/kayleigh-mcenany-i-believe-god-put-me-in-this-place-for-a-purpose

It goes to show what the rest of us could do if only we had faith the size of a mustard seed.

I thought saline implants replaced silicone, because of dangerous leakage and severe health problems (death) from silicone.

Yeah i’m not sure! It must be such a grueling decision regardless. Is the worry that even yearly breast exams or six month ones can fail in detection of cancer should it arise?

And doesn’t the BRCA gene also affect ovaries too? Or is that something else? Becuase I remember Angelina Jolie also got her ovaries removed for similar reasons. (Her mother passing away factored into her decision.)

Yes saline replaced silicone because of leakage I am very surprised her implants were silicone, perhaps she had the surgery done in Europe somewhere!!

Both my wife and daughter have the BRCA2 mutation, and both contracted breast cancer. Both opted for double-mastectomy and hysterectomy, my daughter just a month ago. Modern medicine saved them. My 6-year-old granddaughter will need to be tested in 20 years or so.

yes. A family member had a prophylatic mastectomy only to be diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Positive for the BRCA gene.

I have a long-time friend. She is married to a twin. His twin is female. Her husband’s family has had a long history of cancer. Both twins had the BRCA gene test several years ago. Her husband tested negative. His sister tested positive. The doctor told her that it wasn’t a matter of “if” she would ever get cancer, it was simply a matter of “when.” She had a double mastectomy and reconstruction, and is now abut 73, and has had no cancer. Her brother who tested negative, was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal cancer approximately 3+ years ago. The type he had is a very rare cancer, and is most common in southern China (including Hong Kong), Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines where people typically eat diets very high in salt-cured fish and meat. It’s also fairly common in Northwest Canada and Greenland. The only time he was overseas was when he was in the Air Force in the late 60’s to early 70’s, and was stationed in Pakistan.
He went through heavy radiation to his face, along with chemo therapy. He had to have a feeding port because he could not eat normal food. The radiation destroyed his saliva glands, so he always has a dry mouth, and is constantly drinking liquids. He has to be very careful when eating, because it is difficult for him to swallow, and has to drink plenty of liquids with his meals to make sure he doesn’t choke. He lives a normal life otherwise, and enjoys playing golf with his friends.

OH. MY. THAT is terrible. I hope she is recovering or has recovered. :(

Is it very difficult to do six month to one year ovarian AND breast check-ins with the Gynecologist? Or is that too risky?

The BC gene can effect different areas. But, I am assuming it would start in the breast’s before metastasizing. Or perhaps she’s waiting to complete her family before having a hysterectomy.

They went back to offering both due to advancements in the silicone ones I think.

I thoroughly enjoy her handling of those so-called journalists, and she's easy on the eyes..

Yeah I know she’s doing a good job. I just can’t stand watching the pressers beyond a few seconds because of the ‘journalists’ (I use that term loosely) she has to ... tolerate.

She has obviously endured a lot on the way to getting the job and is well prepared.

I’ve said this before, I still can’t believe how much better she is in the role than Sarah Sanders, and I liked Sarah quite well.
