But it was fitting to hear it, in the very place that inspired it.
The Battle of Baltimore was Sept. 12-15,1814.
Two weeks earlier, the British had burned the White House, the Capitol and most of DC.
Our government was in exile, with President Madison doing his best to keep it all together.
The British turned their sights on to Baltimore, northeast of DC.
It was a combined land/sea battle that turned back the British for good, and to see the flag flying the next morning after the fort had been battered by a naval bombardment through the night, inspired our armed forces, the army and navy, to fight on and to kick the British out of country for good.
Private James Buchanan, our 15th President, fought in the Battle of Baltimore,in the Army, in that battle.
