My husband was on Coumadin for 17 yrs. From 1993 to 2010. He had a bleed in his brain in 2001. He had to have a blood test done every 2 weeks during those 17 yrs. because his INR would change so they would need to adjust the amount of Coumadin. The nurse would call me and tell me how much Coumadin to give him. I would ask her EVERY time what his INR was. A few times I KNEW they were prescribing the wrong amount (to much) and the doctor admitted I was correct. In 2010 his mechanical aortic valve was replaced with a pig valve and he no longer had to take Coumadin only a baby asperin. Thank God as it was after that, that he had several falls.
